    catching a missing dog

Anyone out there with any suggestions on catching a missing pet?  He's been spotted and is staying in one place but no luck so far with the trap or any form of enticment.  E mail pcasom830@aol.com

Any form of enticement? Have you tried another dog? Can you let another dog loose to go to him? Or perhaps on a long lead? A toy, a smelly bone, raw chicken, canned salmon? If only one person is there, and doesn't make eye contact, but offers treats, perhaps he'll come to them. Or leave a small offering and leave the area, then after he eats it, go back and leave some more. Then sit down and wait.

    Good luck to you!

Sometimes if a dog is running away because he likes to play "chase" you can run in the opposite direction and he'll follow.

If it likes other dogs, try bringing another dog by.  I did that with Kenya when I saw a loose dog and he was running away from his owner.  I let him see Kenya and he came over, so I kept him in one place for the people.

I used to have to entice our old dog Jody when he ran out on us w/ lunch meat!  He always ran to this one spot where a poodle usually did his/her business so I knew if I ran right out after him I could catch him, so I was quick when I was young, so I'd just grab the whole bag of lunch meat and run down the street and sure enough he'd come for it.  Then I'd holler at him all the way home telling him what a bad boy he was for running away!  LOL  I would definitely try human food for enticement, though.

dogs that have been stray for a long time are very difficult, and bringing another dog out can go either way,if he is staying in the same spot the best thing to do is take food and water out there along with a sweater or something with your scent on it, put it down and leave,it may take up to 2 weeks or more before he will even let you get close, then slowley introduce the trap without setting it for a few days and finally set it and hide

good luck let us know how it goes

I've read about a lot of success this way. Placing a sweater or something with your scent on it, maybe with a can of smelly wet food too. Do this for a week or so and the dog should warm up to you.

I read Randy Grimm's book a few months ago, and he spent quite a bit of time near strays, even packs of strays, to win them over. The few chases he describes sounded awful.

The rescue I work with uses traps for street dogs and cats to be rescued.....the most delicious meat or fish is used....I have never seen a dog that can turn down cooked ground beef........
