Martingale Collar

Kayjn has a martingale collar.  I use this on him because he has a blig neck and a not so big head, and used to slip his collar at times.  I don't use it for training and it is adjusted so it is just tight enough for it to stay on.  One caution I do have on the martingale collar is that if your dogs like to rough house or could ever get caught on anything, I would recommend using one with a buckle, just in case you ever need to quickly release your dog from the collar.

I use a martingale on both of my dogs. It has already been mentioned that a martingale is a necessity for sighthounds. I buy my collars from k9closet.com The woman who owns k9closet has quite a following among Italian Greyhound owners. Another great place for martingales for a larger breed dog is 2houndsdesign.com The woman who runs this business also has a huge following among greyhound owners but her collars are too thick for small breeds. Both places make very high quality collars and anyone that orders from either place will not be disappointed. I just want to add that martingale collars only work effectively when they are tightened properly around the neck. When the smaller loop is pulled upwards the two metal pieces that the smaller loop goes through should not touch. If they do the collar is too loose. I think someone mentioned that they should not be worn too tightly but if they are worn too loosely they are just as easy to slip out of as a regular buckle collar.

Some of the nicest martingales I've found are made by White Pine Outfitters.  They aren't as decorative as some others, but they feel like satin.  Just google "White Pine Outfitters"

Riley has 2 martingales (and a prong).  I didn't know martingales existed before last May, but am SO happy I found them!  One martingale is very loose, I use it for short walks and bathroom breaks.  The other martingale - his pretty collar Smile - is more fitted.  We use that for the dog park and our runs.  Riley is a very, very strong puller when he sees small mammals or dogs, and the martingales give me a little more control than buckle collars.  I do fit them so that they don't tighten excessively.  The prong we use when he's exceedingly excited or when we're going to a place with lots of people or dogs.  His martingales are "everyday" collars while the prong is for special occasions and is used as a training tool more than anything.

i was just revisiting some posts in my history and remembered liking this one... but i'd like to amend it.

we did get that martingale from ebay, and it was so cute, but Zoey liked to munch on the loop section! i dunno if it wasn't fit properly, but we got rid of it because she would get her bottom jaw stuck in the small loop trying to chew it. so now she has a pretty little flat collar that i also got off ebay, but i'm seriously considering buying a chain martingale (adjustable style!) from a link i found on this very forum!

if anybody hasn't visited this store, they should. looks like great stuff!! just click forum, the scroll all the way to the bottom in member business section. it's called "fido's fashions"... happy shopping!

If the loop was that loose, the collar was fitted too big.  It should fit like a flat collar - not quite as tight as a prong, but not with the loop entirely slack and hanging down.  I don't like a lot of hardware on my collars so I get ones with no buckle.  The con of this is I have to loosen it, put it over the dog's head, and tighten it to fit.  If you get one with a buckle you can fit it once.

No buckle martingale from Fido's Fashion Collars - loose enough I can slip my hand under it, but not hanging down.

A prong is a martingale and is fitted like this....no loop hanging off

what a pretty collar! :) (and beautiful dogs! )

i figured it wasn't fitted properly. it didn't have any way to adjust it tho, which was kinda sucky. but i think i'll be getting a chain one (they seem to slide better i think) with a buckle most likely, for the extra 3 whole dollars lol.

thanks for the clarification. very helpful.

Yeah the buckle will make it way easier.  I avoid chains b/c of my dog's hair but with a JRT I don't think that would matter.
