Deter-For-bid, work on YOUR poop eating dog?!

Our 4.5 month old chocolate lab ;pup is OBSESSED with eating her poop!! We try as best we can to follow her out to her area and scoop it  up. Just now I followed her out, waited and I swear she faked me out! Did her thing, then walked away, I went for the shovel, as soon as I cleared her space, she ran back and gulped it all down!! Grrrr... this is like a bad comedy now! Vet yesterday said to get For-bid or Deter ("stop eating de turds" as my hubby says)- Vet was out of  For-bid, local pet supplies don't carry it, so I bought Deter-similar stuff from what I hear?. Box says 1 pill in food for every 10lbs of dog, she's 26lbs-so I gave her 2 with dinner last night and 3 this morning-she'll be 30lbs by Saturday!- hasn't worked yet. We tried the pineapple thing for 5 days with NO difference at all. I'm sure she's thinking, "Yeah-add some mangos and papayas in there too lady, I love my poop nice and tropical!" A fellow lab owner friend said her dog did same thing as a ;pup- but not as much and her theory is that labs are "food whores" and will eat ANYTHING no matter what the taste. Any ideas-really frustrated, Not too mention she loves giving kisses- POOH-POOH KISSES!! yuk (she eats Solid Gold Hunchen Flocken puppy food- 2-1/2 -3 cups a day)

Wish I could give you the magical cure - if it helps to know your not the only one, well, your not. I tried both Deter and For-bid and neither of them worked. In fact I swear she liked it more.

I never have found anything other then making sure I have a bag with me and being right there to pick up.

I have heard most puppies out grow it - hoping so.

If you're happy with Solid Gold, they make a product called S.E.P (Stop Eating Poop) that you add to the food.  I think it's sold on Dog.com.

Also, and I can't stress this enough with a coprophagic (poo eating) ;pair of dogs myself:  If your dog is eating his own excrement: clean it up behind him.  Don't give your dog the opportunity to eat it.  If you have to follow him around with the pooper scooper, do it.  This will give you the piece of mind that he can't eat it...because it's NOT THERE!

The first thing I do when I go to the dog park is make the rounds and clean up any and all "strays" that I find.  My dog will only eat the poo of those dogs he considers to be in his family unit, but I don't take any chances.

Ahh, the joys of poop eating.  Minsk has recently discovered the delicacy.  Perhaps its all those months of us jumping around like a couple of bozos and yelping "good boy" every time he went outside and then snatching it up as quickly as we could with a blue bag.  I'm convinced that we taught him to think it was the best thing ever.

As we were walking Marley yesterday, we noticed that he smelled something and then right before we can pull him away he gulped down another dogs poop. [:'(] I was disgusted; does anyone know why they do this?  As soon as we got home Marley got his teeth brushed really good along with a breath buster biscuit.

Dogs just like to eat poop.   Something about it contains sugar or something sweet.    This is one problem I do not have, thank goodness.  Read this  [linkhttp://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&C=106&A=1613&S=0]http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&C=106&A=1613&S=0[/link]

I've heard it said that for every copraphagia "cure", there's a dog it does NOT work for....
That being said, we found that fig newtons in the dog's food (and, I'm talking any dog in your household, regardless of which one is eating it) seems to work about 70% of the time.  I have no idea why.  Also pumpkin.  Some have said meat tenderizer or alphalfa (sp?), but I have not tried either of those, nor researched any "bad" side effects.

I suspect you may be right about that Lab "food whore" thing.  However, this one needs to stop.  A once-in-a-while is not the same as this weird game of "poop-and-go-eat!"  Good luck!!

We have a miniature schnauzer (Lady) that seems to think eating her poo, or anyone else's she finds intreeging is the best thing ever. We've always ( say always, but should say "used to" now) put her on a red cord to go outside and do her thing and she's never done it before, and for about 2 months now, she's discovered it and won't stop. We can smell her when she comes in the house and it's aweful!!!! We've caught her in the act and told her NO! as she was eating it, and now she just comes in "looking guilty" and then the smell takes over and you know what she was diong.  We've started going out with her again and cleaning up and we tried switching her foods, and we're completely changed over now, and it hasn't changed a thing! I really hope she grows out of it!!!! She's 1 year & 5mths old now.   I'm feeling your pain!!!  We got a new puppy and he had worms and the vet gave us medication for Lady too because we didn't know who's poo for sure she was eating! It's SOO gross!!!

Day 3 of De-ter,  MOST of the time she poops, sniffs it, and walks away - but that stuff must work only on fresh poop, we did an experiment and left some sitting and when she went back out a few hours later, she started to go for it until we intervened. The opinions about it are so different. Our vet. (who has her brother dog-NOT a poop eater) shrugs it off and says she'll out grow it since it's a recent habit-keep her away from other dogs poop and cat poop.- She just likes her own special blend! Our trainer we work with says it's completley unnatural for a dog to do it and is a dietary and hunger thing-Since she is a "food whore" he suggested supplementing her food with a bit of plain white rice to keep her belly feeling full. The internet says that proteins in the food don't get 100% digested and they appear as a protein treat the 2nd time around. Also mother wolves sometimes eat their pup's poop to keep the scent from predators, hence an instinct thing.
POOP 101!!  I have a Phd in dog pooh, how did this happen:-)?
