What do you know about treadmills?

I try to make sure that my dog gets his exercise, but I'm a wuss when it comes to walking in bad weather - and we get lots of it - from dust storms to just plain cold winds.  I have a treadmill that I use and I've heard that you can teach a dog to walk on them, too.  Morgan is a Bordercollie/Australian Shephard mix, 1&1/2 years old, 65 pounds...very smart & always game for a new trick. I think this would be a fun alternative if it's safe.  Has anyone else heard of this and if so, any suggestions on how to teach him?

I've put my husky on the treadmill in the past. I don't use it much anymore though because she doesn't look comfortable (she has arthitis). I think that the surface is a bit too hard for her and she's afraid she'll walk off the end so she keeps herself in a tighter position.

Anyway, to get her used to it, I'd walk her up on it with treats a few times before I even turned it on (the noise can be unnerving to dogs). After a while I'd turn it on very slowly and eventually increase the speed.

Just make sure that you are there and watching your dog at all times. I would never tie the leash to the treadmill....
