So, out walking J-dog today and we ran into a woman walking a BIG chocolate lab. Great dog, really beautiful - pretty calm, too, despite this white little ball of fluff trying to jump all over him. The lab had on an ENORMOUS prong collar and I was struck by how different our interactions with our respective dogs were, while standing there talking with her. She kept tugging on the collar to keep the dog from going for Juneau, while I'm standing there (flat collar only) and holding Juneau in a sit-stay - as best as I could - treat and clicker in front of her nose. Mind you I've got a 4.5 month old pup and this dog was an adult - and although it was a bit of a struggle I was happy that I had reasonable control over my dog without having to resort to a prong! Though, the lab was probably 3x the bodyweight of my pup...
The lab was clearly frustrated by being held back and barked a few times, pretty loudly - to which the owner responded by squealing "hey! stop that! what was that for!" and making a big fuss each time. Gee, I wonder why the dog barks when it gets so much attention for doing so!
