how to stop barking using CT

    well happy monday everybody.
I tried to do a search to find an answer to my latest question, but when I search for "barking" . . . well . . . you can guess how many results I come up with even when I'm very specific.  So if anybody knows of another post that will answer my question, please feel free to point me to it.
Luke (7 mo old pom) is barking loudly every single time someone walks in the door.  Whether it's me or a roommate or a guest - it doesn't matter.  he barks.  I know that this behavior is pretty typical in dogs - but I'm trying to figure out how to stop it.  I've just been giving him a stern "no!" when he does it up to this point - but it doesn't seem to be helping.  I guess the main reason that it bothers me is that he can be so loud - and often times he'll know that someone is coming to the door before I hear anything - so he totally startles me!  I feel like he shouldn't be barking when I'm home anyways.  When I'm not home and someone comes in - especially a stranger - I wouldn't mind him barking at all.  But when it's me or a roommate coming home, I would like to train him to be quiet - or to give a couple of warning barks until he realizes it's me and then quiet down.
I'm sure that shaping this behavoir is going to take some time - I'm just not sure where to start.  All of your help will be greatly appreciated!

I'm pretty sure that the tips found here will help me.  I just thought I would post the link for anybody else who may be looking for similar help.

I am working with the same thing concerning my pom.  I think they just like the sound of their own voices.... or something ;-)

Mine goes into frenzies when someone is going in or out a door.  It's the strangest thing I have ever seen.  He does acrobats, circles and all sorts of things.

I have been clicking him during the frenzies, when he has a second or two of silence. Sometimes it takes a few clicks for him to get himself under control....but he will give up anything if there is the prospect of food....and eventually comes running into the kitchen for his treat....fighting the frenzies every minute. ;-)

I can tell that it is rough on him though.  But he is a little Trooper.  I call him Mommys Little Soldier.

instead of using something as non-specific and useless as a "no", just teach him a "be quiet" command. He barks once or twice to alert you, you thank him and ask him to "be quiet", or "that's enough" or whatever word you want to use.
