I'm pretty certain it was the weird guy causing the meltdown, rather than her losing focus- we were basically working with her in 1-2 minute spurts and she was able to wander around (off-lead) in between. She wasn't showing the usual signs of fatigue (I've seen it before), and was definitely 100% focussed on the man.
Also I made sure we ended on a good note- after it all I just asked her to "come", which she did gladly, and she got a treat and an ear scratch.
I'm hesitant to leave this trainer to find another because apart from this past incident, he's always been very good. Also, I think it'd be difficult for me to find another trainers in the area I'd feel comfortable with (there are still a lot of very traditional trainers over here), and he's given me fantastic deals (cheap training and free goodies).
I now know the way I'd rather deal with a meltdown if it happens again, and if my trainer still pushes me to do it his way, then I'll consider switching.
mrv- don't feel guilty at all for your slow responses- your replies were incredibly helpful! [
