    What Command Should I Use?

I want to teach my dog to "shake" but I don't want to use the word "shake" or "paw" as the command.  Does anyone have any other ideas of what word to use?

Use "Left" and "Right" for each paw

You could use "Hello" or just a non-verbal cue, like holding out your hand so your dog can shake.

I would tell you the command my step daughter trained Odie to shake to, but it is so politically incorrect that I best err on the side of discretion.  [;)]

You could use just about anything... we say "gimme five" with a separate "high five" if we're really feelin' it. [:D]

may I ask why you don't want to use "shake" or "paw"?Just curious.

Maybe because something else would be cuter?  I know someone who doesn't say "roll over", instead she says "capsize".  Adorable.
When I captured Sequoyah in a passive submissive pose, I captured it, and called it "Are you a hussy?"  So, now she rolls to the side and spreads her legs when we point at her and say that.

Instead of paw, how about "Howdy, pardner"?

Some of my favorites:  A dog named Cookie who's down command was "Crumble"  and Fly who's down command is "Swat"

    MRV those commands are adorable.
Thank you everyone for the suggestions, I still haven't found the perfect command so I just decided to go with "shake" since the kids think its cute.

Lilea, with that trick you may find that the dog recognizes the hand signal (hand extended palm up) more than the voice command anyway... even though my boyfriend and I trained it as "gimme five," my dog will respond to "shake" or "paw" from other people, because dogs usually figure out body/hand signals more easily than words.

I use "wave" and Dulce waves at people. I also use "say hi!"

agreed.  Gracie does "Paw" and "Other Paw"... differentiated by which hand I hold out.  When my left-handed mother holds out her dominant hand and says "Paw", Gracie looks a bit confused... but still does her "Other Paw" command.

that is adorable! i just sent that to a friend who has a dog named cookie :)

My dog responds to shake and whichever hand i hold out.  and then for other paw will switch to the other one.  If he does provide the paw i don't want i say it again or tap the one i want and then he gives it.  Even if i use a different hand but put it in front of the paw i want that works.  Sometimes if he's sitting and has some of his weight specifically on a certain front paw then he'll give the other (that's when i tap and he'll equalize his weight distribution)

For that, Sioux responds to "Port" & "Starboard". [;)]
