    Teaching A Puppy To Bark?

I would love for Lizzie to alert me when someones at the dppr. Sometimes im in the guest room/playroom/dog room at the other end of the house and dont hear when someone knocks. Now Lizzie is only vocal when she is outside and hears the screen door open or hears us come home.

Is there any way to teach her this? Is it that shes too young and will soon 'grow into' that behavior? Thanks!

Don't know how to teach it, but Gizzy barks at any strange noise outside and especily when someone knocks, never does it when she hears me at the door.

Does Lizzie know how to speak? Maybe you could have someone at the door and every time they knock you give the speak command to Lizzie. Don't know if that would work but maybe someone has a better idea.

My pup did this naturally, barking when people came to the door, but I can also get him to "alarm bark" on command and "speak" on command. Alarm barking is of course easier if your dog already does it, because you can catch him doing it and tie a cue to the action. My cue is "Who is it?" - I do this in a soft but excited tone and I think it's the tone more than anything that he understands. I trained "speak" with a treat and encouraging the dog to bark by, well, barking myself, and then saying "speak" when he echoed me. Again attitude is part of it, if you sound excited you can more easily work up the dog to bark. I also took advantage of the knowledge that Russell will bark when he doesn't know what I'm asking but knows he has to do something to get a treat - so in training "speak" I would look pointedly at him but make no movements with my body that might indicate a lure or hand signal.

For you, I'd say try to catch Lizzie in those moments she does bark - and give the cue while she barks, then interrupt her with praise and treats. If you act excited and like you're joining in the barking, she will probably bark along.

Be patient with her ^_^ I know it's hard, but she's still a baby, and while most dogs are naturally protective in some capacity, think about what your dog is bred for.  Herding.  It's not the same as with my breed.  The GSD was bred for herding, but later, protection.  They are naturally inclined to bark, right?

Well, right, for the most part, but a LOT of it is maturity!  Strauss didn't start barking at the door until he was 20 months old!  And even now, he does NOT bark at the door if I am sitting near it.  He just kinda "knows" that I hear it.  If somebody knocks at the door and I'm in the back of the house, I won't hear it, sometimes I don't even hear the doorbell.  So, he rushes to the front of the house and he barks.  Before, he'd just give him a cursory woof.

I wanted a bigger bark than what he was getting, so I'd run to the front of the house, and get him REALLY geared up so he'd give a few big loud (but not neccessarily frenzied) barks at the door.  I now get a big loud ROWF ROWF ROWF! out of him when somebody knocks or rings the bell.  When I open the door, he may gave one more woof, and then he is to sit.  If I want to, I allow them in, and he does the same.  No issues.

Your girl likely just isn't ready to alert you yet.  She's a baby, and isn't ready to be protective.  It's kinda like asking an 18 month old child to come and get you when it's hurt.  It's not gonna happen yet

    Hello
We have a 4.5 month old German Shepard named Jake, he started barking outside about 2 weeks ago, not loud barks, almost like ohh where did that sound come from.
but it did get louder and deeper last nite when we heard him, I even said "is that Jake" we peeked out the back door, and sure enough it was.
When he`s indoors and someone rings the door bell, he hasnt barked.

Yep I guess I sort of figured she was too young! I was just a bit curious if she would start anytime soon or if she wouldnt bark at all. I had a Shih Tzu that would not make a peep if someone knocked she would actually run and hide! Lol but we did live in a non pet friendly apartment and that was what we trained her to do, but when we lived in the house she wouldnt bark either.

Our Pit Bull gave a few barks and would then wiggle her butt to the door [:)]

Our Cockapoo tried to eat anyone that came in the house and the pregnant bitch we fostered would bark when someone came in then would go off and hide.

So I guess every dog is different, but I still have hope!

My pups are 3.5 mos and are just starting to alert bark.  I am lucky that they imitate the adults and I just encourage the behavior.  It shouldn't take much to get a Collie to bark.  lol[:D]

Oh no, dont get me wrong their is NOTHING wrong with her bark, when shes outside she actually barks too much. My moms Golden was a real quiet girl until Lizzie came along. She would actually wag her way to a stranger, and if my mom came outside she would pretend to be a vicious dog by growling and barking at the person LOL

But yea really off topic, the Collie pup taught the Golden Adult to bark when we come home [;)]

Shes just quiet as a mouse in the house [:)
