    Won't go outside

I am posting this question for my cousin.  I have told her she should join idog b/c it is such a great place and she often asks me stuff that I refer to this place on.  I am going to paste in the conversation we had about it her 1 year old dashhound (s/p?).  Her roommate moved out last month and she had his brother.  They used to crate them together.  I wonder if this could be part of the issue as well.  Does anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions?

Alison: Lance almost refuses to pee outside when he is excited.  He stands next to me and keeps jumping up for me to pick him up while Chelsea takes care of her business.  I can stand out there for 5 mins, and he won't do anything.  Then when I bring him inside, the first little bit of excitement he gets, he pees everywhere
But it almost seems like he only has the issue when he's been in his house, and then I let him out and he is super excited to see me

Sarah : Izzy always does the same thing....jumps until I pick her up.  I have gotten to wear I go outside with her and then when she does this I go ahead and pick her up and love on her for a minute until she wants me to put her down which is only a few seconds.  Then she typically will do her stuff.  I used to have to bring her in for a minute and then take her back out.  With me, it was especially bad if I didn't go out with her.  I wonder if giving him lovins or hellos then putting him back down and ignoring him would help.  Have you thought about taking him for a little walk?

Alison: I just get worried about picking him up, because I think he will pee all over me. I always walk to the back of the yard, near the gazeebo but a lot of times, he will stay on the porch

Sarah : And yes, this is always happened to me when she had been in her crate.  I would be worried too, he is a little fountain.  Do you at least bend down and love on him? Can you coax him into the yard with a toy or a treat?  Maybe giving him a treat and throwing a party when he goes outside would help him want to get out there and go with you.  Like potty training 101!

Alison Ewing: I do bend down and love on him, and I do coax him into the yard, but sometimes he just stands there.  I gave him a lot of praise today when he went outside - even though he had already gone all over my clean sheets in bed!

Sarah: Did this just start or has he always done it?  You don't think he could have another UTI do you?

Alison: It just started, and no - because he just doesn't go while he's outside - I know he has to - and then he goes at the first site of excitement in the house

Sarah: Maybe put him back in his crate for a few minutes if he doesn't go and then take him out again until he goes outside.  He will learn really fast that if he wants to come in and have fun he better go outside.

Sarah has the right idea.  When you take him out of the crate, pick him up and walk directly outside to wherever you want him to "go".  Give a few minutes, and if he doesn't, pick him up and put him back in the crate for a while (10 or 15 minutes).  Then take him outside again, and if he doesn't do his business, back into the crate!   When he finally does what you want, then love on him all you want, and let him run around the house.  It takes a little work, but we used this method with a chihuahua, a toy poodle and my Aussie, and it works like a charm.  Heck, it even worked with my cat when she started using my bed as a litter box.  :)  Good luck!!
