    Potty Training

I have a 10 week old Chihuahua that we just got over the weekend. We are trying to Potty train him but for some reason he seems to be holding in both his pee and poop for a really long time.  My 7 month old Chi would eat and drink and go not long after, like most dogs.  This one won't go for hours so we are having a hard time knowing when he need to go.  Has anyone had this problem before? I'm not sure what methods you are using for training, but some pups will hold it if they've been harshly scolded for going in the house.

Keep him confined to a small area and take him out often, he can't hold it forever.  When he does got outside, praise him more than you praise him for anything else and give him a special treat, right at the moment.  If you catch him going inside, simply get his attention with a small word like "uh" and gently carry him out to the yard, and even if he doesn't do anything out there, praise him just for being there.

Ten weeks is very young to expect much results from potty training, so be patient, he's just a little one.  Also, when he does go poop, is it normal or is it hard like he's constipated?  Perhaps a dietary change is needed?

Not all dogs go directly after eating.  One of my dogs has a defininte pattern to her bm's, I can predict exactly when she will be going.  The other, who knows.  For example, he ate his dinner last night at 6 p.m., it's now 11 a.m. on the following day and he still has not pooped.  He'll probably poop sometime around mid afternoon.  He's very unpredictable.
