Going nuts

    Going nuts

Im kind of new to crate training. I've read all about it, and asked my vet. I'm just afraid of doing it wrong and having a dog that is never going to be potty trained.
I went out and got a new crate today. Something bigger, and all metal wire so he can see all around him. I've spent the day putting treats and his toys in there. And I just put his food dish in there (he ate the whole bowl sitting in there).
I've only been at it a week, and I was using my other dog's crate, which is plastic (he can't see out of it), and is probably a little on the small size. Its NOT way too small. He is about the same size as my other dog, but I think he didnt like how little it was. He does go outside and do his business, and  he gets treats. But he does go in the house sometimes. When he "goes" in the house, I just go over, pick him up and put him outside (or just open the door and he goes out). I sit out there with him, and when he "goes" out there I give him a treat. I don't yell, and I don't hit him, or anything. I just quietly get him outside. Then after we come back in I go over and clean the spot (preferrably when he isnt watching me). Is this the right way?

Well it sounds liek your doing everything correctly. Lots of praise when he goes outside is always a big help. How old is he? I hear that it just stakes some time. I have heard also, like you said that your not supposed to let them watch you. Maybe his new crate and situtation will help with his productivity!

He is only about 8 wks old. I know he young, and I know it will take awhile for him to get it. And, like I said, we've only had him for a week. Its so hard to clean uo his mess without him seeing me though. He won't go out by himself, he just sits and whines at the door. And when he is in, all he wants to do is be around me. [>:]

Oh I dont miss those days! I too used to go out with Rory, it would be cold and neither of us wanted to be outside. I tell her "go potty, go potty" and she would just press her nose up against the glass wanting back in but I knew she had to go! I wouldnt go back inside ever, until she had pottied.
So one night it was to cold to sit there so I nonchalantly grabbed a tennis ball and started bouncing it against the house, i turned around and she was peeing! The next time I pretended to be potting flowers (yea liek thats what I wanna do at 11 pm in the freezing cold) but she went! I'm know this sounds crazy, hey it might not work but it might. Maybe she figured "well as long as were out here" or maybe the pressure was off of her and she couldnt feel my frusteration anymore. I dont claim that this a sure proof training method but its worth a try maybe. Praise Praise Praise!
Oh and after that we did the bell trick. I hung a bell by the back door and before I would take her to go potty I would grab her paw and ring it. It only took about a week for me to be in the kitchen and hear that ding dind ding....man I was so excited! The only down side to that is they may eventually learn to use it when they wanna go chase a bird, hear the wind, or some other crazy reason for wanting to go outside, haha!

We have 2 other dogs in the house. So they all pretty much go out together (they hate for the puppy to have any alone time with me). They scratch on the door when they want to go out. My bf's dog has always been doing this, and when I moved in with my poodle, he quickly caught on. I'm thinking the puppy will catch on too. He has scratched once, but that was just to go outside. I try and watch him. We got my other dog to scratch by opening the door every time he went over to it. Eventually he realized that if he went to that door I would open it. That along with seeing that Gracie got to go out any time she scratched, he got it. I've been doing the same thing with Taz. I'm also hoping that being with the other dogs he might catch on that when they go out, they pee (or poop) first, and then play. The vet said have other trained dogs in the house would help the process. Of course Bear still has his accidents. We have just started him in crating also, just when we're not home since that seems to be when he has most of his accidents. When I first got Bear he wouldn't go in a crate. But after a year, I think he has learned to trust me, and that I won't ever lock him in there forever. So he doesn't mind it so much.

Good luck with everything!  8 weeks is real young, but I'm sure your puppy will get it soon enough.

I just started trying to teach Dweezil the bell trick today -- and she's actually done it by herself a couple of times while I was just walking around the house and she really did need to go -- so, it just takes consistency and patience!  As does everything else with these puppies...

yeah! Isnt it a huge surprise when they do that? I got so excited the first time! Addicted2rescue, it sounds like you have a smart guy on your hands and you are doing everything right, maybe it will take a lil while to catch on as you mentioned he is still a wee babe!

Addicted, what I do is say Ehhh Not there, pick up the mess take the pup outside with the mess and put in on the ground outside with the pup, and say Business here pointing to the poop or what ever. When the pup does sniff it and does the deed, praise like crazy saying good potty outside and treat. Hope this will help you in some way. Other than that is sounds like you are doing just fine.
