8yr old Basset wont go in the crate anymore.........

My wifes mother crates both of her Basset Hounds every night around 9PM.  This has been an on-going routine for about 6 years now.  Within the last 2 months the one Basset just refuses to go into the crate.  He will bark, growl (hasnt attempted to bite) and do whatever it takes to not go in the crate.  Any advice on what could possibly have changed this dog's mind about going in the crate???

wow, thats a bit weird. Just remeber dogs are all about routine. Has something changed inside the crate, maybe you took out an old blanket or something else she was used to having there, or something totally new in the crate? Also, have you recently used the crate as a punishment? just a few maybes, im sure the more experienced posters will be able to  help much more!

If she has used the crate as punishment then forget about him wanting to go in there. It could be that or the fact that he's a animal and is just plain tired of being locked up......I'd do everything to not be locked up either, ha ha poor thing

An 8 y/o basset may be getting touches of arthritis or some other type of pain that is made worse by not being able to stretch out or move around. It may just hurt him to lay in there all night.

I think Kelly is  right, and thank you Kelly because I think that Brando may be going through that also. I think I need to up the size

Punishment- no way.  If you can picture a laid back Basset then this is it!  LOL

She just does not want to go in the crate and barks for about 20 minutes once she's in.  It could be arthritis, I never thought about that.  Her barking is getting worse so there must be something wrong.  Possibly time to visit the vet?
