Puppy potty training advise & Crate help to new dog owner

    Hello -

I need some help.  My husband and I just adopted our puppy on Sunday, we named her Maggie, she is a 2 month old lab/hound mix.

1st let me say the foster mother she was living with was in terrible shape, took Maggie to my vet on Monday and she was load in tapeworms, fleas and had a skin rash on her belly.  The foster mother had her outside with all the other puppys in dirty soil and unsafe living conditions. We are in FL and it is quite hot outside now also. Thankfully Maggie is doing much better now. Thank god!

But since we have gotten her home she is very needy/clingy to my husband and I, which really is not a problem other then her walking between your feet and tripping over her.  But what is the problem is she peddles a lot.  I take her out as soon as she wakes up from a nap or when she whines in her cage in the middle of the night to relieve herself.  Also after she eats dinner and several other times when it appears she has to go.

The thing if she does go outside as soon as we get in within 15 to 30 minutes she relieves herself again, not much maybe about the size of a half dollar to a baby fist size.  Also she poops in the house, we have not been able to get her to poop outside yet. I know it has only been a few days but my Vet has said she should be going outside and if she does not go to put her in her crate and she will learn.  But when she has been going pee outside I don't feel I should put her in her crate after going outside.  There was one time that she did not go after waking up from a nap that I did put her in her crate and then took her back out about 10 minutes later and she went.

But the thing is she is now going outside, she is rewarded when she goes and told good girl, but what can I do to help stop her from going inside?

Also with the crate when she is put in there lately she is whining and crying. We tell her no and she stops for awhile but then starts back up.  My husband & I had to run out for about an hour today and when we left she was put in her crate...she started throwing a fit, we told her no and assumed she was done, she did a few more whines but we left.  As soon as we got home and walked into our building she was whining and howling so loud I am surprised someone did not complain.  We live in an apartment right now and moving to a home shortly but can't have her going like this when we are gone for a few hours here and there. My husband is ready to muzzle her and I don't want to do that.  Any suggestions on what to do?
Again and thoughts on getting her to poop outside, stop the peeing, and crate help would be great!

    Thank you for your help!

Take some of her poop outside to designated area so she learns that is where poop belongs.  Watch her like a hawk in the house and take her out often.

I would do that the only thing is she has Hookworms, so we have to get rid of it right away and I don't want any other dogs to get infected with it or any kids in the area since they can be transferred to humans.

She also has seen poop outside, where she was fostered she had them living outside and when I have taken her for short walks around the apartment she has seen other dogs poop....

Any other suggestions that might work?

Definately wait until her poops are free of worms and then you can start training her.  You will have to take some of her poop outside so she sees it and makes the connection to YOUR yard.  Meanwhile, watch her like a hawk - the moment you see her about to pee, make a noise to stop her, and carry her outside.  Wait for her to go, make a huge deal about it, jump up and down and act real silly, and then immediately take her inside.  She's only 2 months old, so she will need to pee more frequently.  Be patient, it will get better soon.  Good luck!

    Thank you!

I have made a noise when she is peeing and she just looks at me but I have never taken her out right away after that, I am going to try that to see if that works better. I know she is young and it can take sometime just looking for any helpful hints on how to help train her and this is the first dog I have every had on my own.
