Husky Mix pup. Very Smart except when it comes to housetraining

    Hey folks,

I just got a new Husky-mix pup.  He's 2.5 months old, totally great.  I've had him for just over 2 weeks now.  He's very smart-- was sitting on command after 24 hours, shaking after a week, and can now distinguish between play and rest time and has not gone after any furniture to chew (yet).  I'm having trouble housetraining him though.  I do the whole massive praise and other suggested time tables for puppy potty time.  He loves being outside and I'm wondering if that is acting as a detriment to his training.  I don't want to stiffle his outside time because I don't mind being out there with him and going on long walks (he'll do number 1 and 2 on those) but just when I think everything is out of his little system I turn around and he's peeing into one of our air in-take vents.  He's only managing one or two squirts because he's been "emptied" from his outside time, but it still requires the whole cleaning regiment.  Does anyone out there have an suggestions? We do have have another dog (corgi-jack russell mix) who has helped in getting the new pup to walk on a leash properly.  (I know he's still very young and I've heard that husky's are a bit stubborn in regards to house training.)

    Thanks
    Lee (and Feyd)

I have a husky/german shepherd mix and I have had her for about 5 days. I have had some problems with house training. One thing that I did was that if she peed in the house, I would take the towels that I used to clean the pee up outside. This will help her to recognize the smell of the "pee spot." Also, I have found that if I stay in one area until she pees then she will eventually do it, but walking is a sort of treat for her. j

Even though he is young, he could be marking. Smart boy for peeing on the return air. That will make to whole house smell like his territory. Sometime later, after potty training you will have him neutered and that has been known to lessen marking in the house.

Sometimes a dog dosnt know what you wan tfrom them when you take him outside to potty. Tell him to go potty (or whatever word you use) several times over and over. When he does go praise him like crazy and go immediatly back inside so he realizes that is why you went out in the first place and now he can go back inside. In the begining you have to set up times when you think they should go like when you first wake up take him outside and dont let him back in until he has gone, same in the evening before you go to bed. My girl was VERY stubborn, she did not want to be out in the cold so she would sit by the door wanting back in. I had to pretend to be doing something outside so she didnt think I was putting pressur eon her, she f thought "well as long as were out here I'll go I guess" and eventually she realized the sooner she goes, the sooner we can go back inside.
I also taught her the bell trick, hang a bell by the door that he exits out of and use his paw to ring the bell everytime before you go out. Pretty soon he'll get the idea!
Oh and he is just gorgeous!
