Doggie door?

    Doggie door?

    Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I last posted, but that's because we had been doing so well with Jänku. She's 8.5 months old now, and we're having a major set-back. And we're concerned because we're moving to our new house in a week (much bigger than our apartmen), and we're not sure how to deal with it.

We *thought* she could hold it for two hours at a time. She's a small breed but 25lbs now. So we thought she could hold it, and went a whole two months or so without accidents. She goes on schedule. But lately, she'll spontaneously pee by the front door. It's terrible... it smells and I can't get the smell out!

What happens is I take her out, then an hour later, she'll have this guilty look on her face, and out of instinct I go and see and I see a puddle by the front door. Why? I did stop treating her when she goes outside, but I've just started again today. We just don't know what to do.

We talked about it tonight and think we should start taking her outside, on the hour every hour for the next couple of months, until she's trained. Yes, right now she has free roam of the house. We've also thought we should babygate her in the room we're in, so that she can't have any accidents.

Third option? Install a doggy door to the (fenced-in) backyard of our new house and let her go out as she pleases. Is this a desperate option or a common one?

If you have any advice, please HELP!!

    Cheers,

definitely start bringing her out more often until she's completely housetrained and don't let her out of your sight while in the house to prevent another accident. a doggy door sounds like a good idea to me.

the smell by the front door could be attracting her to ;pee there again and again. i'm not sure what you can use to remove the smell, but steer clear of vinegar or ammonia (they smell like pee to dogs).

There this stuff called Nature's Miracle. I have used it a couple of times when my dogs were pups. Its a stain remover and it eliminate pet accident stains and odors. The doggie door sounds like a good idea. I have a friend that trained her dog to use a doggie doorbell its called Pet Chime. When ever her dog needed to go outside it would push the button.

We have a doggy door (also to a fenced backyard) and I love it.  Once the dog learns how to use it - and it usually takes a weekend to learn if the dog is already housetrained - he/she just goes in and out when they need to.  If you're busy, or not home, etc. there's no worry or problem.

I too love my doggie door.  Try petastics on that spot by the front door, but do it overnite because you have to completely saturate the spot.  When they pee on carpet, it goes through and SPREADS as it goes into the padding.....so a little spot on top is a HUGE spot underneath.  Don't be stingy with the petastics.
