belly bands to help with marking territory?

i took kenny to the vet and she said that his many accidents were due to marking his territory. she said to look at making "belly bands." she said that i could buy a durable product and make a band to fit around kenny that would cover his penis so when he tries to mark his territory, he pees on the band. she said i could even make a small pocket and place a pad in there to catch the pee. has anyone ever made these or know where i could buy them? i am not all about sewing!! thanks.

I don't think this is a good idea. Urine is a skin irritant--it sounds like a great way to wind up back in the vet's office for hotspots. This technique will make your dog uncomfortable and look kind of dorky, but it won't effectively communicate to your dog what the appropriate behavior is. Marking isn't behaviorally different than any other kind of peeing where you're not supposed to. Your pup's simply not housetrained yet.

Here's a great free resource about housetraining and other puppy stuff:

Well, now, wait a minute.  THOR is almost 4.  Thor is most definately housetrained, but just yesterday I caught the blasted bugger marking packed  boxes.  Twice.  He does this each and every time we move.  And I have to give him unholy heck for it.  And yep, he IS nuetered.  But yes, this IS a behavioral problem and in Thor's case, it's brought on by stress.  He KNOWS that mom is going to disappear now and then, he KNOWS that mom is busy and less available right now and he KNOWS he's gonna have to break in a new yard, and soon.

You sure don't want to leave a WET belly band on a dog....and the vet isn't looking for repeat business or she wouldn't have suggested making a pouch to hold pads.  This WILL save the furniture WHILE she works on the behavior.  You do what you've gotta do.

kenny is 2 years old and housetrained. its not like he is doing all out pees b/c he doesn't know any better. he knows to go potty outside. i don't think it would be all that uncomfortable to wear the band. and hey, maybe if he did pee and he didn't like the feeling of it, he would stop. his behavior was brought on by stress too b/c he did this when our newborn niece was brought over and he wasn't the center of attention.

If used properly, belly bands can be an effective way to stop SOME male dogs from playing "bullseye" with their water pistols.  The best ones we've used are by getting a piece of the nonslip mat you put under a carpet, it looks like a honecomb.  Cut a narrow piece long enough to put around the relevant section of the dog plus a bit to tie a bow.  Get a sanitary napikin, cover the dog's penis with the napikin and secure it with the strip.  He's not going to like it, and some dogs will just tear it off and that's the end of that.  Let a wet pad stay on the dog for a bit, long enough to get the message across.  Obviously, you remove the band when ever you take the dog out and replace the pad.  The dogs that you get to keep it on, after a week or so, have gotten the message and are "broken" of the behavior.... for a while until they decide to do it again.  Like, with Glenda's Thor, sometimes stress will bring it back on.

Dr. Ian Dunbar and Jean Donaldson both assert that marking is not different from any other kind of peeing where you are not supposed to.

Leaving a wet pad on the dog is, IMO, gross and punitive.

I do NOT advocate leaving a dog to wear his own pee for hours on end.  But I don't think it's horrible to let him wait for a few minutes.  Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Thor is NOT marking because he is not housetrained.  He is marking because he finds moving to be stressful.  End of story.  He's not wearing a belly band, but I have threatened to "stick a cork in it".[;)]
