Yes, you can train him and you're right, you might need him to be in a crate sometime so it's a great idea to train him now.
Was he trapped in a Hav-A-Hart (??) trap? One of the wire ones? If so, I'd suggest starting with a vari-kennel type crate and a fairly large one (not giant).
Get the crate and just put it in a busy room in your house with the door off or somehow latched open so it can't swing closed. Don't make a big deal about it and just act like it's a piece of furniture but put a couple of toys in it or a blanket that he's slept on. Start randomly tossing treats around the crate, then near the door, then just inside the crate. Make it very high value treats, not just kibble or dog cookies. Don't make a big deal about him going to get the treat - let it be on his own terms. Once he's getting the treats from just inside the crate start tossing them in a little further. When he's going into the crate on his own start feeding him his meals in there. Then progress to feeding him and closing the door while he's eating. Open it right back up again though. Then start with longer periods in the crate. This whole process should be pretty slow and don't rush it at all. Give him days or a week at each stage at the minimum.
Don't baby him, or act like the crate is something to be scared of - just be totally nonchalant about it. This is really important. Praise him a lot when he goes in but if he's acting scared of the crate just ignore him.
You can also use a wire crate (and eventually you should get him used to one of those too) but he might have an easier time with the hard plastic ones.
Hopefully other will have suggestions too but this what I'd do.
