8 months... Progress, and then a big set-back. Why?

    Hi everyone,

It's been a long time since I've posted, but that's because we've been doing so well with Jänku. For the first few months it seemed we'd never get her fully housetrained. Then, suddenly at 5 months, she went a good two months and a little without a single accident. She was spayed at exacly 6 months. Now she's 7 and a half. Well, this week, out of the blue, she's been having accidents. We thought we knew her schedule. I can usually just TELL when she needs to go.

But this week, even if she's gone 15 minutes ago, all of a sudden, we discover a huge pee puddle by the door. Why? We're not sure. We clean it, and then take her out, praise, treat, the whole bit.

Another thing.. Well Jänku has been enjoying dog walks during the day with her walker, and we take her to the dog park for an hour after work, so she gets plenty of exercise. But lately, her nose has been dry and hot. Is this a sign of something? My husband thinks that a dog's nose should be wet and cold. We're not sure.

So, why these accidents... Not sure. Tonight, within 45 minutes, she's peed inside, gone outside and pee'd, then pee'd inside again! Usually she can hold it for a good two hours or so. Plus, we know the signs, but she's not giving sings when she just goes on the floor this week.

What else.. She's also poo'd. Actually, what's happened is last week I ran out of her Innova puppy food, and I didn't see it coming so one day, I just had to give her some of the vet's food (a free bag he gave me once). I felt bad about it and I should. But I did, and then the next day I switched back to Innova when I bought a new bag. That day on the other dog food, she must have pooped 5 times (usually twice!), PLUS two pee incidents.

So what could be causing this set back? Are we doing something wrong, could she be ill, is this a normal set-back that happens at this age? We'd love your feedback!!!

    Cheers,

    Roxanne

Do you think it may be a bladder infection?  this would make her need to pee a lot more often than normal, and not have much control over it.  I would think the pooping is from the changing of food, and mybe was hard on her little stomach.

Sorry to hear of this setback, just when you thought you had things under control.  UTI could cause this type of setback, as kaykay shared.  All I can add to that is that I had a dog (deceased 3/05) who, whenever her food was changed, would start peeing in the house and sometimes ended up with a UTI also.  She had come from the shelter on Eukenuba and I had to keep her on that her whole live, any change and she'd be peeing.  Perhaps your dog also has some touchy kidney issue also, and the food change irritated her kidneys.

The previous posts are correct, it could be a UTI.  But have you changed/added any meds for her recently?  There are some that will cause a dog to become incontinent for a period of time - corticosteroids often do this. Hope she's o.k.  And if it's any consolation to you, my dogs nose always changes between wet/dry/warm/cool and she's 10 mos as well.
