King Charles pooping in the house

I have a King Charles Spaniel that is about a year and a half old.  In the past few weeks he has started pooping in the house again, after being trained for several months.  A perfect example happened tonight, he was scratching at the door to go out.  I walked out into the yard with him and he just stood there and looked at me, then turned to the door to go back in.  I waited for about 2 or 3 mins and he just stood by the door so I let him back in.  Then after being back in the house for a minute or two he walked over and pooped on the carpet.  This has been happening quite a bit lately.  Any ideas on what might be causing this, he's seems to be telling us he has to go, but will not go outside.

    Thanks!

Have you scolded him for accidents in the house?  Sometimes the dog learns "I'd better not poop in front of the human", instead of "oops I made a mistake, better go outside next time".  Be sure you aren't doing that - also, stay outside longer, and if he doesn't go, put him in his crate, not loose in the house.  Then, try again a few minutes later and praise or give him a cookie when he finishes his business outdoors.  Clean any mistakes with Petastic, so the smell will not linger for him to find again.  HTH
