Puppy pad training

    Puppy pad training

Roxy is approx. 10 weeks old and we have had for about 3 days now. While she is in her area she uses the pee pads no problem, it's when she is outside her area we run into some problems. I know this is something that *I* have to work on and not her so your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
When she is in the family room I have one pee pad out. When she is near the pad she will use it, when I say near she has to be within an inch of it. So if she is far away she will go on the floor. I'm watching her like a hawk and usually can catch the poops, but the pees are harder. I'm still learning on how to tell if she is sitting or peeing and because she is so small, if she does pee I might not even notice it on the floor because the puddle is the size of a dime.
How can I work with her to make this training easier for both of us? When I catch her in the act I say "Ah Ah" and immediately take her to the pad. She will usually pee a little and I throw a party for her. She get's it a bit because I've notice when she wants attention she will go to the pee pad and use it and wait for me to give her kisses and a belly rub.

I want to set her up for success so any information would be great.

Watching her like a HAWK is important right now.  Either leash her to you or crate her when you can't pay FULL attention to her.  I did SEVEN recently, but I got really lucky in that they were such velcro pups that if they weren't right next to me, I knew someone had to pee.

    Hey, Sarah,

I missed the part where you got a new puppy, what did you get?  I'll have to bounce by the pictures section to see if you've posted any pics.

Ditto to all that Glenda said and also you may need to limit the pup's territory.  Gate it in an area that's big enough to play in, with one corner it's sleeping corner with it's bed, and another corner it's pee pad area.  When I was training Misty to the pads, I was very generous with them, I would lay down a layer of newspapers and put 4 pee pads on top of the papers, making a very large area of pads.  It helped her to succeed.  It took her a long time to be trained that if she was in one room and her pads in the other, she needed to leave that room to go find her spot.  A ten week old puppie can be paper/pee pad trained, as long as they aren't allowed too much territory to wander through.  They don't need much room at that age and do well in a confined location.

angelamarie- Roxy is the new puppy. I picked her up last friday. My sisters friend had bought her and wasn't allowed to keep her. We have a tentative agreement that the puppy will go back to her when she is done school, however I highly doubt that will happen.

She's full of spunk, I can't get over it. Harley is a bit put off but he's slowly coming around.

I posted a few pictures in the photo section.
