Having to pee every hour?

    Having to pee every hour?

We have a five-month-old-cockapoo named Rudy. He is in his crate during most of the day except when I come home at lunch to let him out. He has no gone in his cage since about the first week we have him. However, when he is out of the cage he needs to go out about every hour. It this normal? How is he able to hold it for 4-5 hours in his cage, but for only an hour when he is out of his crate?

Any help would be great!! Thanks!!

It could possibly be because he's sleeping when he's in his crate.  From what I've read from more experienced posters on I-dog it's much easier for dogs to hold it when they are sleeping...kind of like humans.

My pup does the same thing, by the way.  I know it's frustrating taking them out SO much, but it'll get better.  It better!  Hahaha.

That seems in the realm of normal.

I would also say he can hold it longer in the crate because he's most likely sleeping... also, he may be holding it in the crate because he has no other choice.

My 2 go out once or twice an hour to go potty. Heck, for that matter I think I go more often! LOL!

Completely normal! Rudy looks like a pretty small pup, and I've learned from others on this forum that it seems little pups take longer to mature to the point of holding it longer than bigger pups. It wasn't until maybe 6 or 7 months that I felt I wasn't constantly letting Lucy outside. Don't worry - there will come a day when you ask if Rudy has to go "potty outside?" and he actually won't have to! [sm=lol.gif]

I was reading a website that had some information on housebreaking a pup.  It said that dogs don't like to use the bathroom where they sleep.  It also said that a dog can usually hold his/her pee for every hour of their age+1.  Example, if your dog is 2 months, they can hold their pee for 3 hours.  N+1=hours held.  N representing the age of the dog in months..hope that helped a little.

Sounds normal to me too. It will get easier with time, just watch him like a hawk while he's out of the crate to prevent accidents. He should be able to hold it longer as he matures. 5 months is still pretty young and small dogs seem to take a little longer to be able to hold it longer.

We have the same thing with our beagle. He can hold it in his crate, but wants
to pee about every 2 hours when we are home.
He's 3 yrs. old now, and he's always been like that.
I guess he figures why should he hold it, if we are home to walk him.

I got my Ricky (chihuahua) at 11 weeks old- he peed every 15-30 minutes, all day- and I'm not exaggerating!.
It actually worked out in my favor, because it gave me SO many opportunities to get him on the potty pads and praise him for doing the right thing!

With my Lucy, she only went every few hours, and it was a lot harder to figure out when to put her on the pad...  So it might actually be a blessing in disguise!
