    New Puppy

Me and my boyfriend just got a 4 month old Bloodhound and we are having a very hard time getting her to listen.  She knows how to sit now and we have only had her a week.  But when she does something wrong, we go to discipline her and she doesn't seem to care.  It doesn't affect her and we can swat her and she doesnt care.  I need help!

Why are you hitting this baby?  Swatting her only teaches her that you are unreliable in your reaction to her.  SHE doesnt know what you want, what is bad or wrong, all she knows is that suddenly you are swatting her......

What sort of things is she doing "wrong"?  Perhaps we can offer suggestions for correcting THAT behavior more specifically.

Well, what you've got there is a bloodhound!

The traits of the bloodhound: independence, emotional sensitivity, stubbornness. Ask any bloodhound owner what happens when they yell at their dog and they'll tell you that the dog cries, the dog sulks, the dog pouts, the dog leaves the room. Notice "the dog behaves" is not in that list.

    Do not hit dogs. Ever.

Oh dear, please don't swat her, would you swat a 4 month old human infant?  If you tell us as Glenda suggested just what she is doing "wrong" we will try to help. What books have you read so far?

You've got a hound - you're going to have to get used to being patient!!

One of my favorite trainers, especially for puppies, is Ian Dunbar. http://www.siriuspup.com/about_founder.html

espencer, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Cesar Millan a behaviorist and not a trainer? Seems these folks could just use a puppy kindergarten class and a wikipedia article about bloodhounds.

You are right he is a behaviorist but that does not mean that they need to use behaviorist techniques untill they dog is doing extreme behavior.

"But when she does something wrong, we go to discipline her and she doesn't seem to care." Thats for me a good sign to start [;)]

I will be the first to admit that I don't know much about training a hound, but logic would tell me that if slapping the pup doesn't get the desired result, you stop slapping and find something that WILL work, preferrably in an +R mode.

I like to set pups up to succeed so that I don't ever NEED to use the more traditional methods, but that is my preference.  I would really like for the OP to come back and give us more specifics....I don't think any of us, regardless of our training philosophies, can offer much help based on "when she does something wrong"
