Puppies peed in thier crate yesterday...

I don't know what happened.  We still only have two crates for the puppies and Crusher.  Since Crusher is usually left upstairs when we are gone the girls are usually seperated into the two crates.  Yesterday however they were in the same crate because for some reason come time to leave Crusher went into his crate and would not get out.  They were only in there for about 5 hours.  They have on occasion been in there longer without incedent.  So I was very surpised and not in a good way when I got home to the two of them standing in about an inch of pee.  What happened?  Is it because they were together.  I personally took them out before I left and they both peed outside.  They are just over 5 months old and it has been some time since we had an accident in the house.  And there have been no accidents since.

From what I have been told when puppies do a lot of playing it stimulates them to
go pee. Since they where in the crate together this may have been the cause of it.

Hey I never thought of that.  They have been fine since, and have spent a couple nights together when Crusher gets crate possessive.  I think they may have had too much water as well.

I have 5 border collies 4 are 3 years old and I have a new one 8 weeks old.   I have crate trained all my BCs separately and together.  I have found that disconitnuing water after 8 PM every night and putting your pup on a schedule will go a long way in preventing crate problems.

Second, leaving a pup in a crate for extended periods of time will likely result in potty problems.  I found that feeding them in their crate stems the possibility of accidents.  Dogs and puppies do not like voiding in areas where they eat.

Finally, change the bedding materials in the crate at least once every few days.  Even though you may take them out to potty, they return to the material they sleep on.  Sometimes there is a fecal or urine transfer from the dog to their covers.  "Changing the sheets" will go a long way in preventing the scent from being in the crate.

Oh, um well they dont actually have any bedding in their crates.  I feel bad for this but for some reason when they first came they would run to thier crate and pee on the bedding.  Neither of them slept on it.  I think there may have been some overcrating before they came home that started this issue.  Or maybe its because she paper trained them.  Ugh!  But actually there have been no problems since I posted this thread.  I do limit their water intake at night.  And we go out to pee just before they go to bed.  Once they are houstrained I will retry the bedding thing.  But even Crusher just pushes his bedding aside and sleeps on the pan.  They're huskies so I think it might just be cooler for them.

Don't feel bad about the lack of bedding huskyom.
Years ago my baby chow pup wouldn't settle in his crate until all the bedding was removed. The cold metal base was far more comfortable thanks [:D]
So much for the hot water bottle and cuddle rug bought for the new baby.
