    hank like bushes

hank is a 7 month lab newfoundland mix, i like to think he is pretty smart but in the last month he seems to like destroying my bushes that surround my back yard.  he breaks off branches and then chews them up into little bits for me to sweep off my back porch. needless to say the wife is going crazy.  and i don't really want to plant new shrubs.  any ideas?

Ummmm... don't let him do this.

Stop him when you see him near the bushes and give him something else to do, not in a punishing way, just in an "Oh, Hank here is your chewy toy play with this!" kind of way.

Puppies do not come preprogrammed to know that the wife likes the bushes--he'll chew on whatever you teach him to chew on.

My rhodadendrons are getting thinned out lately.   I think it is a habit that needs to get quenched too.  Esp since the rhodies are supposed to be poisonous.  Anyone else have this problem?

My dog will bite at my artifical bushes and plants inside if she is out of rawhides to chew on.  I keep a good supply so there's always a couple for her laying around and she is much better.

    Welcome to the forum.

Puppies are GOING to chew.  There is nothing you can do to change that fundamental part of puppy development.  What you can do is control what he can chew.  To do that, you need to supervise him and redirect his chewing toward something more desirable TO YOU.

I have a newfie/lab, too and he is a HUGE chewer. Mine is 8mons, but I had a newfie/springer awhile back who ate a log off the wood pile each day. Big raw hides. Big, big raw hides. Mine is good about chewing appropriate things, if they're available.
    Good luck!

Does he get a lot of long walks? He needs lots of exercise to burn off energy and make him happy.
