Dogs on furniture

    Dogs on furniture

I haven't seen enough of his shows to gather what his take is on this one.  Does he advocate it or is not not being allowed on furniture part of RB&L?  Is it OK provided the human invites  the dog first?  Is it OK provided the dog doesn't object when told to get off?  Does he only suggest banning from furniture in really pushy dogs?  Or does he not see it as an issue at all?  (I don't let ours on the furniture at all.  I used to aes ago but stopped when we got a load of new stuff and wanted to keep it looking nice and new for as long as possible.  Somehow we never let them slip back into the habit.)

I'm interested in knowing this as well.
I know for me, personally, Ella is NOT on my furniture unless I or another human in the house is and has invited her.
I know I'll catch her on my bed occasionally when I walk out of the bathroom, but a simple "off" does the trick.<---I just read on another board when this same topic came up, someone said that that basically is a big doggy middle finger. hahaha, I thought that was funny.

He doesn't think of it as a rule. A calm submissive dog, he thinks, is allowed on furniture if the owner permits. In one episode, a Bulldog jumped on a couch (right on him) and without a slight hesitation started to lick his face. The owner laughed. Cesar asked: "Is that ok with you?" The owner said: "Well, no." "Then don't allow him to do that."
I totally agree with Cesar on this. I allow my dog on furniture when I am in the mood. He used to raise and jump, now he's learned to be aware of me, he slowly creeps in [:D]... If I am in the mood I give him an 'OK' look, If not, I block and he sits on the floor.

He talks about this on this blog (all the way down)

I think he agrees with the dogs being on furniture as long as they dont do it without you inviting them first and getting off when you tell them to

From my understanding, he's OK with dogs on couches or in beds as long as they understand that it's YOUR furniture and get off of it without argument. I let Lucy go wherever she wants - she even sleeps under the covers with me in our bed - but she gets out without argument when I ask. Our Dalmation was banned from the bed because he would growl and snap anytime you got anywhere near him. He may be OK now, but his arthritis is so bad that he can't get up anymore so I haven't tried.

When we first got Lucy, she would go nuts in window behind the couch. We tried banning her from the couch entirely but that didn't really help. After watching an episode where Cesar dealt with a dog with the same issues I started only asking her to get off the couch when she was too excited. Now, when she gets excited about people outside our window she actually jumps down of her own accord or with a simple "Uh-uh" when I point and snap my fingers. I don't mind her laying on the back of the couch watching the world outside - she just know she can't get all excited if she wants to stay there.

Yeah he has meeting several of those, here is one that did exactly the same at the moment of talking with the owner and the owner asks if that was wrong:

If you could, I'd greatly appreciate it!

IMO, inviting dogs on furniture is ok, as long as the dogs get off when told.
An animal just taking a seat or a lay down and then refusing to get off is trouble in the making.
I do believe CM looks at it the same way.

This is a bit OT but do you think that was a "dominance thing" or resource guarding.... or maybe his joints were troubling him at that point and he was saying "argh don't make me move, it hurts dammit!" ?? (I haven't noticed any change in our dogs behaviour since we made them stay on the floor.... they don't seem unhappy nor do they seem better behaved in any way..... mind you they would always shift if you told them "off" so we never really had an issue with it)

Can you run iTunes? There are a ton of CM podcasts on iTunes.

Definitely a dominance thing. He started doing it at about 18 months old. He was also very demanding about food and attention. If he tried to crawl into your lap for attention and you asked him to get off he'd growl and snap. He'd also growl and snap if you didn't get away from his dish fast enough after dumping the kibble. That's when he got kicked off the bed and I started asking him to sit and wait for his food. I didn't know about NILIF then. I just didn't want him near me during times I knew he would bite and snap! It helped quite a bit.

I had forgotten how bad he was until this year when he had a severe colitis attack and didn't eat for nearly a week. I was so concerned about getting him to eat that I quit making him wait for his supper. He started growling and snapping at me again if I was within 5 feet of him. Back to the sit and wait! Even then he started barking at me to demand his supper. So I had to drop everything and stand with my back turned for 30 seconds (a technique from Peggy Tillman's Clicking With Your Dog). He still gets the "last word" and grumbles at me the instant I release him to eat. We're working on that next.
