Dog plays keep away with items

My 13 month mutt Dixie has an issue of keeping toys and other items from us.  If we want to take a toy, bully stick, ball, toliet paper roll from him, he runs from us and seems to think it's a game of keep away.  This can be quite annoying when it's trash or a basket.

When I try to take it from him I move sideways to him and slowly.  When I get close he invariably runs away.  If I'm able to get my hand on the item he'll tug a bit and growl (seems to be more of a playful growl).  Play fetch can be a pain when he doesn't allow you to throw the ball again because he won't give it up.

Have no problem with food and once we have the toy he's ok with us having it.  Can you guys give me any tips on how to help change this?  I want to curb this before it escalates to something worse.  Thanks!

Do not chase him. Ever. teach the trade command.

To your dog, it is a game. The funnest game ever, if you've ever seen dogs playing at a dog park. One dog grabs something, anything really, and then proceeds to take off running at which point all the other dogs follow and chase. Repeat.

Obedience training and NILIF should start to deal with the issue. You need to work on a recall command so the dog comes to you every time, whether or not something is in his mouth. Once you've got that down, work on a command to drop whatever is in his mouth ("give" "out" "trade"), and do so not by just grabbing stuff unceremoniously out of his mouth randomly but by "trading up". If he's got a ball, trade up for a food treat. If he's got a bully stick, trade up for a piece of liverwurst. As the trade is taking place, use whatever command you come up with for that. After a while you should have a dog who "comes" and then when you say "give" (or whatever), drops whatever is in his mouth waiting for his reward. At that point you can start only rewarding periodically for that. But do keep rewarding, every now and then, and reward lavishsly. Basically what you want to communicate is that coming to you and giving up his toys is in fact the best way to get everything he wants, and that nothing bad every happens when he does that.

Also if you don't already, start the NILIF program.http://www.k9deb.com/nilif It's a very easy, simple, hands-off way to establish that you are in control of all resources in your home and the dog must ask politely before getting what he wants. It's a wonderful way to establish rules and boundaries.

We've been working on some aspects of NILIF...I should say I have, my girlfriend just babies him and is quite detrimental to my work no matter how much I tell her to change.  Makes my work twice as hard!

Anyways, I wouldn't say I chase him, more like I block his path.  Also, I'm working on "trade", he loves his tug toy and will drop whatever he has for the tug.  He's pretty good with general obedience with few distractions.  We're still building in distractions for "come" to help get him going.  This weekend should help when he starts class with other dogs.

    Thanks for the help!

This is a very fun game for both dogs and humans. We play it all the time. The problem is that you aren't the one deciding what the object should be. Work on a good solid drop it and when you have that down, it is great sport. Our dogs play usually with sticks and we chase them all over the yard looking like loonies.

For drop it start with an object the dog is mildly to moderately interested in (maybe an empty plastic water bottle) and trade for an object of higher value such as a biscuit. When he has that down pat, start with higher value items to be exchanged for even higher value treats. Don't engage in any play or keep away until he's got it down.
