Thanks for your replies! Dixie is her name. She is approx 4 years old. She was a stray that showed up in my yard a while back. She was whimpering on the front porch and I asked her if she was "whistling dixie". My girls asked me if that was her name and I told them it could be---so she was named. She is a great dog. I can't imagine why someone would have not wanted her. Her only drawback is she digs in the yard chasing moles. But, we don't have much problem with moles anymore!
I am happy to report that she is starting to go back to some routine today. She carefully walked my husband's truck out this morning. She has always announced our departure from the driveway, and this was a welcome sign to me, even though it lacked her usual energy. This afternoon, she was acting a little more perky when I came home. I think she is going to be okay. I still can't believe that she made it through this ordeal. She didn't bark, at least not when anybody was around. My mother goes outside to smoke frequently and she never heard her. I was in the vicinity twice and never heard anything. Maybe she barked at night when nobody was around. She lost some weight, but she was quite stocky to start with, so the vet said that was probably what saved her. She has drank lots and lots of water since we found her and is eating fine. We are really fortunate to have her. [
