personality or age difference?

    personality or age difference?

ive had a dog now for 3 months. he is 10 months old.he has always seemed independent, and is a non-alpha male. i dont have to worry about him crying and barking when i leave him alone, he only does that when he needs to go out. i take him off the leash sometimes, but unless im very stimulating with a toy or food, he wanders off, and can be a struggle to catch. he also doesnt let me or other dogs sit or lay next to him when hes sleeping and wont stay near very long. he leaves , or growls and tries to bite if leaving is not an option.

now im taking care of my friends 2 month old, and hes very affectionate. he sits on my lap when i watch tv, i can walk him outside without a leash with no problems, and he sleeps with me through the night. he seems a bit more aggressive when playing with my dog than my dog is with him, and whines when i leave him by himself.

question is, is my dog just a bit anti, and the difference is because of personality? or is that puppy following me around because its so young and dependent, and mines doesnt because its an adolescence?

is that puppy following me around because its so young and dependent, and mines doesnt because its an adolescence?

Exactly right - this is sooooo common.  But, what it means is that you trusted  your pup to follow you, and never really taught a good recall because you probably thought he was already doing it. [:D]  It's not too late. [:)]

You are definitely seeing an age difference (baby vs teenager), but your dog spent his first 7 months without you.  Do you have any idea what his socialization was during that time?  The first 12-16 weeks are critical in forming a dog's personality.

all they knew was he was found as a stray. i am so tired of fighting with him on a leash and seeing how easy this little puppy is makes me want to give up. today i took them outside to play and my dog wouldnt even play with us, he went and sniffed a bush for an hour.

There are some free lessons on this site:

Also, here's a book that has step by step training:

Don't be discouraged.  It takes time to build a relationship with a dog that doesn't understand what you are trying to tell him.  Even if he didn't get everything he needed as a baby, maybe you can make it a little better.  Love him for who he is, and start training.  [:)]

Spiritdogs and Janet are giving you some good info.

Your pup probably missed some of the more critical times of socialization.  It doesn't mean your pup is beyond help, it means you have to try smarter, not harder.  Be the most interesting thing in his life.  What makes him tick?  Is he food motivated?  Play motivated?  What does he want the most of?  You be the sole provider of that resource and things will change.

Just a thought:  Some breeds are a bit more independent than others.  I'm lucky enough to have one of them.  I have to work twice as smart as most others do.  It's not working harder, it's being smarter and being the provider of all things good.  Building the trust in the dog-human relationship can be more difficult if your dog missed those critical socialization stages, but it's never impossible.

thanks for the help. whats a good way to teach "come"

    any good websites?

i want to hae a safety zone like the puppy does. where i dont have to call "come" and "stay", where he can do what he wants but wont go outside where he can see me. is that possible?

you realize that in a few months the younger puppy is going to start running off too, like the older dog?
