    sad dog

hi i'm new here but i have a couple of questions
i have two dogs Brook; great perinese, and Cyo; mix btwn a husky and a colie.
    first off
Cyo got hit by a car two years ago since then her tail has been paralized (sry bout the topic but) her poo has been getting stuck on her tail and then falling of around the house. I was wondering if it is possible to amputate her tail. she is 5 yrs old.

Cyo's previouse owner left to college (my sis). they were very close cyo would follow her around everywhere nowadays she follows me around but since my sis lives in holland in a small apartment we cant send cyo to her. she has been very depresed since she got hit by the car but it has gotten worse now that my sis left she always has her ears against her head instead of perked up, she used to smile but not anymore she used to be energetic and full of life but now she is very calm she still eats fine, plays with brook etc. any ideas on how to make her a bit hapier

my mom wants to find her a new home because she has bad habits
she scratches on the door, she tends to walk in ppls way, she alway wants attention and to get it she scratches or licks people inclucing my baby sis and nocking her over. i dont believe these are reasons to kick out a dog. so please is there a way to fight the habits or make my fam understand that kicking her out is very unfair.

    thanx in advance,
    Cyo, Brook and Milou
sry if this is a bit long

Yes a tail amputation can be done but on older dogs it's questionable.  What did the vet have to say after the accident?  Did they do x-rays?  Was there any mention of removing the tail if it failed to gain function?  You would have to check with the vet on his/her openion about the tail.  Also the cost would be high.

You could also do a tail and butt trim.  Just clip away the long fur from the underside of her tail and around her butt where it get stuck.  An electric trimer would work the best.  You could take her to a groomer if you don't want to do this yourself or if she's a little to squirmy for you to do yourself.  Even a vet might be willing to do the trim for a small fee.  Feacl matter left on a dog can burn the skin so it can become a medical issue also, good reason for the amputation depending on how bad it is.

Now for the behavoral issues.  Any dog of any age can be trained.  A good "leave it" command would work to keep her away from things you don't want her near, like the baby.  There are some good dog training books out there that are very helpful.  You could also do some obedience training with a class.  I personlay think every dog owner should take their dog to at least one class in the dogs life to get a better understanding of their dog.  It's great ane you meet others who are having the same problems you are.  The training may also help tp perk her up some.

the vet didnt say much about her tail after the accident he only warned us that the function might not grow back. there doesnt seem be any health problems yet. I might try trimming her we bought a trimmer earlier this summer. money is kind of low at the moment so maybe later ill talk to my vet about amputating her tail.

two years ago my sis took her to an obedience class where she learned basic commands like: come, stay, down, sit etc. she listens very wel when she wants to but i guess a leave it command could be worked on.

Good, now you just need to contunie with the training she learned.  Work on the comands she was taught.  Just like us if we stop working at it we will forget how to do things.  Just working with her on obiedence will give her some much needed positive attention.
