    Naughty Puppy

Hi! I just got a new shih tzu puppy who's 3 months now. He seems to enjoy running after everybody's feet when we're walking, nipping the feet as we go to the point of tripping us. We're all afraid of stepping on him and hurting him.

Also, he seems to hate taking baths, to the point that he scratches my arm raw because he wants to get out of the tub. Any type of scolding doesn't seem to work. Any advice for my majorly naughty puppy?

    Thank you!!

scolding a puppy for being afraid is counter-productive: try giving him treats and praise instead for putting up with the terrors of a bath. It's normal for puppies to nip at moving feet, moving hands, and pretty much anything and everything. Best way to train puppies is to withdraw attention-- pup nips at feet, well, human freezes and stares off into space in a very boring fashion. Pup doesn't nip at feet, human intiates a fun game, or offers a treat, or pets the pup.

    Christine,

My Shih Tzu puppy is about 3 months now and he does the same exact things that you describe.  It seems to be very normal behavior for a puppy. [:)]

When he nips at my feet, I just tell him "No!" sternly and redirect his attention to a toy.  That repetition seems to work well and he almost always stops and doesn't continue to do it again that session.

As far as the bath goes - he HATES it! I hold him as still as I possibly can and use a very soothing voice and continue talking to him.  I use very gentle water and pour some running water from a cup because the faucet noise seems to scare him as well.  Just keep talking to him and telling him what a good boy he is when he sits.  I think most puppies dislike it so hopefully both of ours will get the idea that it's not so bad eventually!

    Hope this helps! [:)]
