    fixed dogs

Is it a myth that getting your dog fixed changes it's personality? I never thought so, but some people swear it does. What do you guys think?

Fixing a dog usually does change personality (at least IMO) but it is always for the better. A fixed dog is a calmer dog, he is not intent in finding every female who may be in heat, and with a bitch she doesnt come into heat which takes away the maniac tendencies they have to get out and get bred by ANYTHING with 4 legs

Yes, I was going to say they are calmer for that reason, but I guess their basic personality stays the same. Thanks.

    P.S. Cute baby and dog.

If all of us boys were to be fixed, at a young age, I do believe that not only would our behavior be better, but we would accumulate more wealth.  [:)]

Golly, there sure do seem to be a lot of broken dogs around that need fixing......[;)]

A co-worker had his stuff cut and tied off after two kids. He was bound and determined he would not sire another child. Two was plenty for him, regardless of he was to marry again, or not. And he's been happy with the decision. And it's a good point. He can afford to care for two kids and their child support.

edited to add: it didn't change his personality. He's still a mouthy pain the butt when he wants to be.

That's an excellent point, Ron.  Far too many people just like kids, and keep dropping one right after the other, without giving any thought to what it will cost to raise them.

Male dogs that are neutered are less likely to become dog aggressive, urine mark, or wander.  Some females actually become less tolerant of other dogs after spaying, but it is a myth that the dog will get fat - dogs get fat for the same reasons we do.  And, since a dog can't control portion size or exercise, that's up to the humans.  But, the dog's basic personality stays the same.  And, the fact that there is no chance of the animal creating even one more unwanted puppy is reason enough to do it:-))

Although, I have heard that a male's temperment may change after being bred.  Not necessarily for the better either.

I have a theory regarding belief.  When do ;people generally get their dogs fixed? Usually around 7-12 months, right? And isn't that when many dogs start growing up and going through the bratty phase, and then settle into their adult personalities? Fixing has nothing to do with that, it's just a coincidence that the dog happened to be fixed right around that time in it's maturation process.

Fixing in males can make them a bit more settled and lessens their desire to pee all over every single thing they see, but it's never a guarnetee. I've always had neutered male dogs and they're still very much into peeing as a hobby. [8|] Though when they meet an unaltered male at the dog park (which I really wish people wouldn't do but oh well), they are instantly enchanted. They know there's just something different about this dog. They follow the unaltered dog around slavishly, trying to work out just what exactly is so awesome-smelling about this guy.[:D]

Russell was neutered at 8mo, and just now at 16mo he's decided to start urine marking. I didn't see any noticeable changes in personality after he got it done.

Everyone said Sally would get lazy after she got fixed.  I'm still waiting........

Max was neutered fairly young (shelter rescue) but I don't think his basic personality is any different than it would have been.
