    aggression towards intact males

Hi everyone [:)]   Just wondering if anyone has any experience with a dog who likes every dog he's met except unneutered males.....  he growls and tried to jump up/on them - doesn't bite, but isn't given too long to try it, either.  I hate going to the dog park since then we have to keep him on leash until we're sure he's okay and then if someone comes in with an intact male while he is off leash then he gets aggressive.  But, it is the only place he can run since we dont have a yard and most people have fixed dogs.  So we just try to go late at night right when it gets dark and everyone is going home....... but now that it gets dark so early people are staying past dark since it is only 8:30 or so.

Is there any way to get him over this?  Very hard to desensitize against it since he goes crazy to get up to the dog then growls and jumps - and he sounds vicious!  I don't *think* he would do anything too bad, but who the heck really knows what he would do in this situation.  So we can't keep him on leash and approach other dogs and I dont know anyone with an intact male who would let us try to socialize them.

We got him 3 days after his neuter surgery so I'm not sure how he was before he was neutered.

any suggestions would be great!  thanks!

I think it does take awhile (4-6 weeks) for his testosterone level to significantly drop after neutering, so that may be part of it.  Intact dogs are commonly a target for aggression, or at least posturing - my personal opinion is that the owner of an intact dog (male or female) bears a certain responsibility to keep the dog out of "trouble" so to speak.  That said.. you need to get control of your dog.  Have you gone to obedience classes with him?  If it were me, I would do that and I would work VERY hard on getting a 100% recall on my dog.  Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply.........   He was neutered 6/1/06 so it's been almost 3 months.  Hopefully the testosterone is gone or on its way to be!

We have done obedience with him, and he picks up commands fairly quickly - but you're right, his recall could always use work.  We try to okay games with him to learn "come, Sammy!" or "c'm here" but he's a bit shy and sometimes he just goes and hides under the bed, or if we have him on leash he just gets this glassy look and refuses to do anything.  Not sure exactly what it is, whether he gets scared or what.  But we're working on that as well.  He also isn't toy motivated very much and even food won't make him look twice if he gets spooked by a noise or quick movement.

BTW, does anyone have that DVD on Really Reliable Recall, I think by Leslie Nelson  that I could borrow?  I would pay shipping, etc if you would be so kind!!

But I guess what bothers me the most is the owner of the intact male in the dog park talking on his cell phone and not caring one bit that my dog is growling at his and we're trying to get him on leash and his dog just won't go away..... at the very least I wish the owner would also see the problem, see that we're trying to get our dog so we can leave and CALL their dog away!  sigh..... but I can't expect other owners to be responsible, so it makes me be even more vigilent.

Can you image the looks I get when I walk into the dog park first and go look at the dogs to see if I can tell if one's neutered before I bring my dog in?  [:)]  There's me following dogs trying to look underneath them....... hahahaha.

Unfortunately, if he was neutered late, he may have learned this behavior because he was intact, and is now still practicing the behavior despite the loss of his testicles.  This is one reason we advise people who aren't going to show their dogs or breed them to neuter early.  Some late-neutered males continue to urine mark, too.  Sad fact of life - but it is much easier to deal with if the dog has a good "leave it" and "come" command.  Do lots of training before taking him to the dog park.

yeah.... I guess that's what we get when we adopted from the HS, since they did the neuter before adopting him to us.  Oh well, one more of the characteristics that make him Sammy [:)]  Though, I have to say, he hasn't marked ONCE in the apt - the only time he peed in here was on my foot when he had drunk a ton of water and had to go!

Thanks for the reassuring comments about training, that there is at least some hope for getting him better about this!
