Help dog getting in trash

• Help dog getting in trash Barb Posted : 8/21/2006 10:34:40 AM Our adopted St Bernard has just started getting in the trash in the kitchen.  He has never done this for the past 3 months that we have had him.  He is left alone alot as I am a college student and work also but has just started this.  He is 3 years old.  I need some ideas on how to break him of this habit.  My roommates dont like the mess he his making. He is even getting into it when someone else is home (not me). • fuzzy_dogs_mom Posted : 8/21/2006 12:22:36 PM A couple of years ago we replaced the kitchen counters & sink, and the new configuration of pipes left no room for the trash can under there.  I found a wooden one in a catalog that has a pull down front door - the trash can fits inside.  Since it looks like *furniture* I can leave it sitting out and the dog can't figure out how to get at the garbage. They are old-style mousetraps with a big red plastic paddle that keeps the dog's nose from getting nipped. Set the Snappy Trap in the trash can -- the dog will investigate and be startled by the noise. • Barb Posted : 8/21/2006 6:40:09 PM Thanks for all the ideas.  We have tried a gate but he is about 130 lbs and just walks though it. I dont have any closet close to put the kitchen trash in. We live in an older home (renting while in college) and the trash does have a dome lid but he can open it.  Has anyone heard of using something that taste bad to spray on the items and then after he has tasted it he will stop? • Ruth Posted : 8/21/2006 9:08:12 PM My dog was just starting to get into the trash -- we have a cheap domed plastic lid as well -- but he got permanently scared off of it when the lid wasn't properly attached and fell to the ground with a clatter when he nosed at it.  It spooked him, and ever since he steers clear of the trash can.  That was totally an accident in our case . . . but maybe it could work for you if you set him up?    You could try spraying the top of the trash with bitter apple (tastes yucky) but if he's already gotten some yummy stuff out of there, you may have to do a *lot* of consistent spraying before he gives up.    Putting the trash out of reach might be easiest.  If you can't find a cabinet for it, you could put the trash on top of the counter, or in another room with the door closed so he can't get to it.   0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available.
