Jack Russell's sudden aggression

    Jack Russell's sudden aggression

I have a 1 1/2 y/o female JRT and for the past week she has remained in her play/sleep areas and if we try to pet her she growls.  What makes it more unusual is that she's been 'protecting' 3 toys keeping them in her kennel and she may even carry 1  of them around as if it were her pup.  She's is not fixed but there is absolutely no possiblity that she is pregnant.  She's eating very little and just has an all around bad attitude.  This is all total opposite of her character; she is very nosey, playful and affectionate always trying to lay in mine or my husband's lap but this last week she's wanted nothing to do with us.  I have no idea what's going on.  Does anyone have any ideas?  It's really weird cause she doesn't have any other problems like diarreha or vomiting it's almost like she doesn't want anything to do with us anymore!!

    False pregnancy?

If she's not fixed, there is a chance she's pregnant.  I'd take her to the vet first and get that checked out.  If she's been in heat recently she could be having a false pregnancy.

Unless she's a show quality bitch, I'd get her fixed asap.  There's no shortage of unwanted puppies from dogs that "couldn't possibly be pregnant."

Ditto, it sounds like a false pregnancy, but if you weren't aware that could happen, it sounds like you aren't knowledgeable enough yet to be the owner of an unspayed female.  Please continue to learn, and get your dog spayed.

Thank you for the responses.  A false pregnancy was my first thought but since she's been in heat before and didn't happen I dimissed it.  In response to spiritdogs, i'm quite capable of owning a dog but I felt I would also like to discuss it with other dog owners.  As far as her being fixed it's not quite that easy as i'm stationed in Germany and the service is not readily available so she's been placed with a German provider.  There is no reason for me to explain this  at all but I had to, as I love my dog deeply and she is provided with everything she needs to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  By me not thinking it was a false pregnancy in no way shows that I don't care about my dog.  I was posting the question to gain knowledge not criticisim.  Won't post here again.  Thanks.

Sorry, but I'm not buying it.  There are vets in Germany, too, who can spay a dog.  I didn't say you don't love your dog, but IMO, you are not qualified to be a breeder, and, therefore, should not leave your dog unspayed, unless there is a medical reason it can't be done.

I have two JRT's. The female is now almost l0 years old and she has always exhibited similar behavior with her toys.  She loves beanie babies and any small stuffed animal. She carries them around like they are her possessions and no one is allowed to go near her when she has them. My suggestion to you is to distract her to get her away from them and then put them away. My dog will get to play with them only under supervision and only one at a time. Never around another dog, She gets ;playtime with a more acceptable toy that she won't go nuts over. We play ball. She loves her Cube. Just be aware of your dog's behavior. Mine has gotten overly aggressive and is currently taking Prozac because she has problems. My other JRT is a 7 yr male who is just a sweetheart and not aggressive. Like I said, just take the stuffed animals away and don't let her think she is boss or you will have more problems in the future. They are sweet and cuddly but they will always try to get you to do what they want.... good luck and I hope the situation is better now...

Dawny - not that Spiritdogs needs me to speak for her, but I think you misunderstood. She didn't say you're not capable of owning a dog or don't love your dog - she said that since you seem to lack some knowledge about female reproductive issues in dogs, you probably shouldn't have an unspayed dog. Having intact dogs is whole different ballgame - especially with females' health issues you really have to know your stuff. Unless she's a show dog, it's easier, healthier, and smarter to just spay.

I would just like to say just because you have a dog that is NOT desexed it does not mean you are going to breed. Some people prefer to wait until the dog is fully grown before desexing, yes I do know that it is better for them health wise but this dog is only 1 1/2 she may plan on getting it done soon. After all for every study there is to say it is safe to desex them below maturity there is one to say that it should NOT be done until maturity.

Whether the dog is desexed or not they can still have phantom pregnancies. I myself had a foxy cross that was desexed and she still had a phantom pregnancy.

I think some people should take a step backwards this lady came her for advice and she copped it off certain people. Even if their intentions are good there are ways to say things that don't make you look like an abusive over opinionated know it all.
