my dog won't let us sleep!!! please help!!!

    hello

we're are so frustrated with Rocky our JRT.  For the past week he's been crying in his crate at early morning hours.  at first he was crying half an hour before our alarm went off.  we were ok with that, it was only 1/2 hour.  now he's crying at 2 am and just won't stop.  all the training books say to ignore the crying, which is what we do. but he continues nonstop up until 5:30 or 6.  he won't let us sleep!!  we're at wits end.... please help... any suggestions???  we're really in dire need of sleep...

btw, we know he can hold it for 7-8 hours. he's shown us he can.  before, there were no problems he would sleep and lay quiet from 10 or 11 to 5 or 6 -- and there would be no puddles in the crate.  now, it's just the opposite...

    thanks for your help

How old is your JRT?  Is the crate in an area where he can see you?  How long have you had the pup?  Do you withhold water at least an hour before bedtime?

Is Rocky getting enough exercise to tire him out before bed time?  Maybe  you need to walk him or play with him to tire him out.  I agree keeping the water away the last hour.

Yup, both aof the previous posts just about wrapped it up.
Your fur baby needs to be heavily exercised or its just cruel to them to put them in the crate.
He defintly needs to be able to see you or he feels abandoned, you can't make him feel comfertable in his crate if he has no sense of security and while WE know in our heads things are just fine, its just bedtime your pup may not. A lot of puppies do regress once they have gotten familiar with their owners but that dosnt add up to security. Your babe went from sleeping, eating, playing 24/7 with litter mates and now his whole world revolves around you! he looks to you for direction, approval and security.
Pack mentality tells him that if he is seperated from the pack then he is as good as dead but he will get over that. Also even if he has been able to hold his potty for a certainamount of time dosnt mean its pleasant for him to do so everytime. I held it for 6 hours to vegas one time but that dosnt mean I'd ever wanna do it again, ha ha!
So exersice, let him see you from the crate, and dont try to comfort him when he is in there or he'll think you are praising him for his misbehaior. Obviously I'm not suggesting yelling at him but a firm no should be sufficient. Some dogs like a article of your dirty clothing in the crate so he has your smell with him, maybe some stuffed animals, and such! Good luck with your baby and keep us posted!

    Hello...
    To answer your questions,
He's 8 mos old.  We've had him for 1 1/2 mos.  We put his crate in a spot that allows him to see us on the bed.  He's only a few feet away. We take his water away around 8:30 and his last walk is at 10:30.
We tire him out with a long walk around 6.  We don't have the energy to go for a nightly 10 pm run to tire him out again!
We can't put stuffed animals in his crate or anything made of fabric b/c he tears it apart.  Believe me, he will eat anything made of fabric; we've seen the aftermath of such events.  We used to put a sheet over his crate to make it cave-like but we had to stop because he was eating it!
After all of this, what can u suggest?
    Thanks!

Well goodnes, I've heard JRT's are hyper but he seems stubborn. I can imagine it being hard sleeping through that crying, darn and I thought I had him figured out. I'll go search this forum and see if I can find some other advice!

We recently had a little bit of crate regression with our seven month old GSD mix.  He loved his carte for months and would hang out in there to play with new toys etc.  Then one day he just decided that he was gonna make a run at being crate free.  This resulted in about a week of agony as he would cry when put in there at night for like an hour or two.  This lasted about a week and then stopped as suddenly as it started.  One other thing you might want to look into is that he might have a UTI.  Our pup suddenly couldn't hold it as long as he used to a few months back and that was why.

do you have a kong? both our dogs have a kong in their crate. we also bought then a "tire biter" and nylabones. both our dogs shred stuffed toys so they dont get those either.

if you dont have a kong i would highly recommend one, and we put goodies in them to give then an even greater reason to chew them. recently, i have been filling them with a mixture of plain yogurt and cheerios and freezing them. the dogs love that.

I second the notion that he should be checked for a UTI.  Male dogs get these during their puberty.  It's not uncommon to see a bit of pus-like discharge from the penis during one of these episodes.  The vet told me that many males get these infections.  That can cause discomfort and the inability to hold it.

Using the old puppy rule 8 months old means he should be able to hold it for 8 hours, but not every dog can hold to this standard.  Smaller dogs have higher metabolisms than larger dogs.

Does he do this only on the weekdays when he's crated most of the time? Or is it a nightly occurrance?  I'm thinking that it's pent up energy that he feels the need to burn off during the week.

I think you're going to have to dredge up that energy somehow and get him out running at 10 pm. JRTs are VERY active dogs, and he's just hitting the highest energy period of his life. What does he do between his 6 pm walk and bedtime?  What does he do all day-- have you considered doggy daycare? can you get him fetching, tug of war, short training sessions, maybe during every commercial while you watch TV or something?  Maybe make him earn his supper over the course of the evening as training rewards?
