    butt shaking

    hello everyone.

my dog is a seven-year-old mixed retreiver. she is really sweet but lately i have noticed some unusual behavior. she shakes her butt. sort of like dancing. if she really gets into it she will swing her hips back and forth and rock from one rear paw to the other. the weird part is that she usually does not wag her tail. she keeps her tail stiff and just shakes her can like shakira. not like shaking off to dry herself and not like humping.

she usually does it when she is happy. she sometimes does it when she wants my attention. considering it is cute as hell this always works. lately she has been doing it more frequently. but i bet this is because i reward her with attention because it is adorable.

she does not have hip dysplasia.

i know a lot of other dogs but none that do this. anyone else seen this? does anyone know what this might mean in dog body language? i assume it is something good.

also, have any of you noticed your dogs attempting to copy your human behavior?  i dance a lot (in a similar fashion...) and wonder if she is mimicing me.

A lot of dogs butts do this in conjunction with tail wagging when they are happy or being silly.  Kayla was a great butt wagger and your right its extremely cute.  Her tail was always wagging too though.

Dogs can get something which causes their tail to just hang and have no movement.... "limp tail" or something like that.  I may have that name wrong, in fact Im sure I do... but she may have this which would cause her tail to just hang instead of wagging when she does this.

Hopefully someone with more help will be along.

    Welcome!

Hey, how about that I had it right[:)]

Heres a link with more info, it seems retrievers are prone to this also, and it also seems if that is whats going on with her you may want to have a vet check it out.  Heres the thread:

Sorry to keep posting... seems it is uaully caused by water.  Has she been swimming lately, or had a bath?

She could have sprained or  broken her tail, and she needs to get to the vet, to check it out. It's extremely painful, although you won't know it unless you touch it and she hollers. does it feel swollen to you.

    hello.
    thank you for responding.
she has not been swimming or had a bath lately. her tail does not look or feel swollen. it seems to be working normally. she has not smashed her tail as far as i know. she does not appear to be in pain. i can touch it without any unusual response. as far as i know she has never dragged her butt on the floor. i don't know if anal glands could be involved.

it is time for her annual check up, anyway. i will mention it to her doctor.
