    Barking puppies

I just got 2 new puppies last Saturday. I am crate training them and so far it's not going badly. The only problem that I am having is when I get up in the morning...the barking is INSANE until I let them out side. They will go out long enough to have a quick pee...and then the want back in. If I go back in the house, they bark and sit at the door. I want an effective way to let them out in the yard, so they can go potty and run around a bit. One is a mini schaunzer and the other is a Lhasa Poo.

    Thanks

Go outside with them.    Dogs want to be with their people.

I have read that you should walk your puppy on a leash even if you have a fenced yard.  Some dogs that don't learn to go to the bathroom on a leash may never do it.  Also, you should be supervising them while they are outside, so that they actually go and so that they don't eat anything they shouldn't or get into any trouble.

I think you should always be with puppies 100% of the time (except when they are in their confinement area) until they are at least a year old. You want to bond with them, and careful direct their behavior to ensure good habits.  Also, if you really want to potty-train quickly you need to reward the potty-in-right-place-quickly by having a fun game or walk afterwards.
Note to lurkers: It is a really bad idea to get two puppies at the same time. It's impossible for anyone to provide enough attention and time to more than one puppy, and you are in serious danger of having the pups bond to each other and develop little interest in interacting with humans-- becoming "doggy".

What on earth possessed you to get 2 puppies at once?  You need to be careful to give them time apart and special time.  They'll need to be walked seperately and have seperate obedience classes as well.  You run the risk of having them bond much more closely to each other than to you.

You need to have a seperate "play time" and "potty time."  Since they are pups, you need to go out with them, and it's best to place a command on the "potty" behavior.  Say something like "do your business" or "hurry up" and when the pup potties, it gets a reward.  It won't take long to reinforce this behavior.

The reason you seperate the play from the potty time is that the pups will often become a bit confused.  They will think that going outside is for play and they'll forget all about emptying their bladders or their bowels.  As soon as they go back in they'll remember and take care of it right then and there.  It's won't be their fault.

As far as keeping them in the crate overnight...not the best idea.  I've always gone by the rule that puppies need to go out at least every two hours during the day and that they can hold it for the number of hours that they are old during the night.  Example: a 6 month old puppy should be able to hold it for 6 hours during the night.

Maybe I err on the careful side.  It's alot of work to have one puppy, it's close to 4 times the work to have 2 of them simoultaneously.  Again that's just my opinion.

Why wouldn't they want back in??? You are inside.  Why do you want them to stay out?  You should never leave a puppy outside on its own.

Xerxes, I am not sure if I understood you correctly... I don't really agree that you shouldn't keep a puppy in a crate overnight.  We never crated Duke and it was horrible, took him over a year to be house trained.  Daisy on the other hand is doing amazing.  Right from the beginning we crated her... and although the general rule is that a puppy can hold its for the number of hours as it is old, Daisy has slept straight through the night (10 PM to 5AM) since she was 10 weeks old.
But to the OP, if your puppies cry in the middle of the night to go out, you must take them out.  Now and again my 1 1/2 yr old dog will cry to be let out in the middle of the night, sometimes they just can't hold it.
