My dog grinds his "stuff" on the carpet!

My dog grinds his "stuff" on the carpet!

I've had my dog, Bubz for about 6 months now. I got him from the SPCA and had him neutered immediately. He is continuously grinding his stomach/genitals on the carpet, even crawling down the hall grinding himself. I took him to the vet that did not think much of it, and said that maybe his stomach itched. Has anyone ever heard of this before? It is kind of embarrassing when company comes over and my doggie is massaging himself, rocking back and forth!! If anyone knows any tricks to help him get over his obsession please let me know. More than anything though I just want to know that there's nothing wrong with my lil baby.

Does he have any discharge from his penis?  A UTI may be possible..?  The vet didnt even look into it?

I haven't seen any discharge, but that doesn't mean that he's not rubbing it off. Thank goodness for my deep carpet cleaner! And believe it or not, no the vet did not even look. He grinds himself outside as well, the only thing I have noticed on his penis is an occasional dirt clump, usually like a small rock in his fur around the area if it starts to grow out between grooms. He has been on amoxicillin for a few weeks for a small puncture due to his possum hunting. If it was an UTI wouldn't that clear it up as well?

My dogs drag their tummies on the bed, grass, and any rug they have contact with. I think it feels good to them....

Yeah I think it just feels good for them also... if its just the occasional thing he may just be rubbing it for the heck of it.  If its more than normal, which only you can know since your there I would go back and have them do a urine test on him to check for a UTI.

I could be wrong but I dont think it would cure the UTI.  I could be wrong of couse... I looked up UTIs in dogs and some antibiotics came up but I didnt see that one.  Sorry not more help.  Also, I dont think crust is normal...?

Oh... and you can sqeeze the tip to see if anything comes out... not hard, just gently.  The vet shouldve done that...  I dont think anything at all should come out... but just because it may  not doesnt mean its not one... but if something does at least you know somethings up.

    Sorry, Im just learning.

All I can say is, it's called a PENIS.  Not stuff.  A penis.  A simple word that is the name of the body part that he is grinding on the carpet.  It's not a dirty word, it's not a vulgar word.  It's the name of a body part.

LOL! I just did not want to use "penis" in the title. Thanks for the advice everyone. Bubz has really bad allergies and when I take him back to the vet for a cortisone shot, I will emphasize him checking it out more thoroughly. He does do it a lot, but with his itchy skin it probably does feel good to him. He is quite the expensive doggie, but to my family and myself, he's worth his weight in gold. I will really be angry with my vet if it turns out he has had an UTI an has suffered with it this long!

There are others on here like Jessies_mom who have a lot of experience with allergies who you may want to PM or something... or look up some allergy thread in the search area.

You dont want to be giving your guy cortisone shots unless you absolutely have to.

Have you tried giving him Benadryl?  There are some other things you can give too hopefully someone will come along or maybe you can ost another thread about it, but a lot of people here could help you find alternatives to the shot.

BTW - Any other funny looking things on his belly?

If it were a UTI, I would think there would be more signs of discomfort than what you are describing.  Like Mic said, he's a guy.  Maybe it just feels good.  With that said, I would insist the vet check things out just to be safe.

My little guy had a sheath infection once, that was not a UTI.  But there was green stuff coming out of the sheath even though his penis was not.  I don't remember a lot of rubbing but there was definitely a lot of licking of it.

I just wanted to let you all know that I did take Bubz to the vet this morning. The vet found no infections or anything like that. Basically, he said that he is trying to itch the area. Bubz got his cortisone shot which he only needs a few months out of the year along with advantage twice a month during the warmer seasons. I have tried benadryl with no luck unfortunately. But I will definently take the advice and check out the allergy sections as well. Thanks again for all the input, I was really starting to worry.
