New Puppy - Angry Adult Dog

    Hello,

My husband and I have a 1 year old, male Yorkie-Poo, who has been extremely spoiled (we don't have children & have the tendency to treat him like one).  We just got a little 7 1/2 week old, female Yorkie-Poo 2 days ago. Our male dog is usually really good with other dogs, but absolutely hates this little cutie!  Every time she moves, or we touch her or she makes a noise he growls and barks at her.

Has anyone gone through the process of adding a new puppy to your home?  Is this normal?  Will it last?

    Thank you in advance...

Two days is too early to tell how things will shape up.  How you introduce the new dog to the old one is usually pretty important, but that's been done already so...
What you've told me is typical older puppy picking on new puppy behavior.  Eventually the new one will get sick of it and respond.  But for now keep a close eye and make sure that when the new pup yelps or whines the older one backs off.

There's more advice to follow, from those who have vastly more experience and knowledge than I do...

When both of you are around take turns with each dog and give them equal attention.

Welcome to the board. It's good to know that I'm not the only one going through this very same problem. My two poodles have been going at it for about a week. Everyday is getting better. The older dog will actually sleep with the puppy, let her eat and drink out of his bowls and play with his favorite toys. Eventually he takes them back and then teases her with them. I try to spend quality one on one time with both of them. I think we both need to just give it some more time. Good Luck

Welcome to the board. It's good to know that I'm not the only one going through the same problem My 2 poodles (1yr old male and 10wk old female) have been going at it for the past week. Every day is getting better. The older dog actually lets the puppy sleep by him, eat and drink out of the same bowls and play with some of his favorite toys, although not for long.Their play seemed very rough at times and I was afraid he would hurt her, but nobody has yipped yet and she keeps coming back for more. Sometimes she initiates the whole thing. She's small but mighty. I think the best thing we can do is to let them work it out and to give them more time to adjust. Good Luck! Let me know how things are going.

Yes just last week,My 2 half yr old german shepherd doesnt like other dogs although mixed with them dailey from a young age.
I got a german shep pup last week and have a crate for him,he was left in the crate so my dog could get to know him but saftely, then the next day i got pup out but with my older dogs muzzle on,after a few outing together throughout the day with muzzle,i removed the muzzle, they are now best of buddies and are eachothers shadow.

Well Duke, (the adult dog), is doing a bit better.  He is slowly tolerating my little Daisy.  We have been making sure to give Duke tons and tons of attention (even more than usual), and making sure to take him out on his own so he gets some one-on-one.  I think that is making things better.  Daisy is sooooo hyper and even though she is about 1/16th of his size she is running and chasing him and jumping up to bite him!  This is actually good because he has started to play back now, although he has not learnt how to be gentle yet, (she is always running to us yelping!).  Yesterday, by bedtime, he wasn't growling at her at all when she was around!

    Thanks for the replies!

I wanted to add that at 1 year, your older dog isn't really an adult yet.  That doesn't really happen, in most breeds, until about 2 years of age.  He's alot like a teenage boy...big enough to be an adult, but still has alot of kid left in him.  And most of us guys don't really grow up...[;)]

Well my little teenager, Duke, has done a total turn around!  He actually is starting to really like Daisy.  He is following her everywhere.  If she tries to leave the room that we are in, he will growl at her and push her, with his nose, back into the room.  He still has his moments, like when she tries to take away his treats, but for the most part he is being amazing!  I am so proud of him!
