    couch potato

our puppy has started getting on the furniture. we have not let any of our other pets get onto the furniture, and they never really tried to be on the furniture anyways. we are clicker training him, and have been trying to clicker train him to get off of the furniture by using the command remove. well now it has turned into a game where he can get treats! he goes from the couch to the chair to the love seat, in this kind of race to see how many treats we will give him before we give up. last night my wife said to just let him stay on the furniture if he wanted to so, this may be a moot point now. what other suggestions do any of you have to get our puppy to stay off of the furniture?

    thanks!

Put a leash on him and don't let him on the furniture, if you really don't want him up there.

i think that is the problem. i really dont mind if he is on the furniture. i do feel a little guilty that our other pets have gotten used to not being on the furniture and now we are going to let the new arrival get on the furniture.

Personally, I never formally taught my dog to get off the furniture. I do let her up there sometimes to keep my company, but a simple "off" will make her get off.
It didn't take much for her to learn that, because she's very sensitive to verbal punishment. It just took a slow, loud "Sierra, Off!", accompanied with a tap on her butt and she'd get off. Now she knows the command, and doesn't mind getting off and hopping onto her own cushion that she has on the floor.

That might be an idea for you.. give your dog his own bed and teach him the command to go there.

both of our dogs have their own beds. one inside their crate and one in the living room. we were trying something similar to what you mentioned, but he can be stubborn. that is when we started trying using the clicker.

No dog in my house gets bed or couch rights unless they are willing to get off when I ask them to.  Remember YOU are the leader and you control all things good.....

Maybe try modifing the off command to "bed" and have a bed on the floor where he will go...put it near the couch and clicker when he gets off and onto the bed (lying down)...and slowly move the bed away from the couch but still only click and treat when he gets on the bed and lies down?  It could even just be a specific blanket that is his...mabye that would work that way he would know his place and it would be harder for him to jump back up if he's laying on a bed away from the couch.  I am not sure if that would even work but it's the same theory as my trainer was teaching with "park it".
I bet the leash idea would work wonders though!
