We have been working really hard on some resource guarding Wesley does... He is fine with things he just picks up, you can take them right back - but once he is chewing something, he would perceive it as his, and if it was good enough, he would growl if we tried to take it. So - we started working on different things - the balls, once he learned they were for fetch, he has been 100% improved. We got to the point with most things that we could come up, tell him to drop it or leave it and we could take the thing (and give him a really good treat instead). The frozen raw bones, were still sticky, so he was getting one, once a week, with a leash on, so if we needed to pull him away (ie - if he wouldn't trade, we didn't have to give in to avoid a confrontation)... Today, I gave him the bone, no leash. Twice, I went over and very happily fed him a good treat, moved the bone, just to another position near him, praised him and left. Then after 45 minutes, I went to the kitchen, got the bag of treats and called Wesley. He came and brought the bone to me, and gave it to my hand when I said "give." I told him he was a GOOOOD BOY and gave him a very good treat and told him to sit while I put the bone away (all the while praising). Then I told him how GOOOOOD he was and took him to get his squeeky ball to play some fetch as a reward... WOOOHOO!! I know we are not perfect, I still need to work and work to get him to give it up, no issues, in his space - but, having him give that bone to me, is a HUGE step - I am very happy with him this evening!!!
