A dogs digestive tract is far shorter than a humans...food is literally in and out before it can be a problem.

My dogs see a holisitic vet who recommends "Wellness" brand for all her patients that do not have time to do raw food. I do a combination of "Wellness" kibble and canned, and than alternate with chicken, fish, sweet potatoes, etc.

sorry it took me so long to get back. each dog is different as you know. my old man zippy (german shep mix) would inhale his food. my little girl suki eats her food very delicately and slowly. there is a danger of bloat that occurs more frequently in some breeds than others, and that can be a trigger of it as glenda mentioned.

as for alpha training, taking a dog to classes might make it obedient, but it won't necessarily make the dog view you as a leader. my old dog was the alpha in the house and i never knew it. he was trained and knew how to sit, lay, come and heel, but honestly he was the boss in the house. one thing that is important is to never react to a dog's growl by turning away, but you have to catch it in the beginning. this is how it starts. example: if you're playing tug with your dog (not a good idea) as a puppy and the dog pulls and growls and then wins the toy he/she has proven themself the leader over you. dogs are continually testing their boundaries and this can be just a starting point to lead to further aggression down the line. i'm not saying you shouldn't play with your dog. just that you should choose your activities wisely, and always make sure you finish in control of your dog, and not with your dog in control of you.

as for raw food it's important to note that if you decide to give your dog raw bones they should be replaced every 1-2 days.

on a side note: glenda, do you mind if i email you for that recipe? i've been thinking about switching my girl's diet.

hey sorry for the long reply. i've been really busy with school considering that we're in the last 3 weeks. crunch time! anyways... i use to give my dog some cooked beef bones that didn't splinter when i broke it. and he eats it? would he eat the raw too?

i do tug of war,( kind of, when im trying to get the toy back) then i throw it. is this showing that im dominant if i take it first then throw it. also my dog doesn't growl. is this normal? i just figured that hes not going to live to see me get really weak, and im pretty strong so even if he tries to out power me, i can always grab him and hold him down and tell him no. does holding him down (kind of in like a bear hug position from behind him while he sitting down) show that im dominant? i do this until he stops struggling.

my dog is pretty good with sit, down and stay commands. but gets really excited when people come over and has problems listening. hes a chow and they're known for their stuborness.

and back to the gulping situation, i started to hold the kibble by his teeth and he'd chew it. and i just say good boy and ya. then after a while he starts chewing when i feed him kible by kibble. but after on he forgets i think and doesn't chew. or when i put it in his bowl. should i continue with this?
