Puppy won't touch food...

    Puppy won't touch food...

He still eats cookies and this new Tripe food we got him, but he won't touch his old food. He walks up to it and it looks as though he's playing with it or burrying it. Would anyone know why this behaviour is happening? I mean he has no other signs of sickness or anything other than disinterest in his food.

    Thank you in advance.

He isn't eating the kibble cuz you are giving him cookings and the tripe food.  IF you eliminate all other food, he'll eat what he's given in his bowl.  But, that said, what are you feeding?  Sometimes dogs know better than people and won't eat something (like pedigree) that isn't good for them.

It is President's Choice Puppy Food [linkhttp://www.presidentschoice.ca/FoodAndRecipes/GreatFood/ProductDetails.aspx/id/10353/name/PCNutrition1stPremiumPuppyFoodChickenandRiceFormula/catid/63]http://www.presidentschoice.ca/FoodAndRecipes/GreatFood/ProductDetails.aspx/id/10353/name/PCNutrition1stPremiumPuppyFoodChickenandRiceFormula/catid/63[/link]

He ate it great before. It has the same ingredients as IAMS. I guess I'll have to eliminate the soft food for a couple of days. It's just weird cause he was eating great before this.

It's not a horrible food, but you could do better.

The rule in my house is this.....you eat what you are given WHEN you are given it or you loose the bowl and don't eat ANYTHING until the next regular mealtime.  Period end of discussion.  Did I mention that I have NO picky eaters?

Thanks glenmar. I suppose I need to get a little tougher with the little man. LOL!

Do you have a recommendation or preference of what you feed your dogs?

Really we went with that cause it's the only thing he was eating after trying Eukaneuba and IAMS. He didn't like them.

Actually, it's GLENDA.....thats why I have a sig...so folks will know what my name is!!  [:D]

The foods that you have tried are at the lower end of the quality chain...both Euk and Iams.  I personally feed Innova, homecooked and some raw.

It's come to my attention that I was perhaps being rude in my last post by mentioning my name and gosh, I sure didn't mean it that way!  If you TOOK it that way, please accept my apologies!

No offence taken at all Glenda. LOL! I never took it that way no worries. Thanks for the recommendation though, as I really want nothing less than the best for my boy.

Neither of these foods are what I would feed my own dogs.  If you are interested in better foods, lots of people here can help, or you can visit [linkhttp://www.mordanna.com]www.mordanna.com[/link] "The Dog Food Project".
My dogs usually eat Innova Evo, or something similar.  Iams and Presidents Choice are heavily grain-based, and have preservatives or other ingredients that I don't want my dogs to have.
Tripe tastes great to many dogs, and they love the stinky smell.  So, that, coupled with the fact that the food you are using is not as high quality as some other foods that are available might explain his lack of interest.
Once you are feeding a high quality food, you would simply put it down, leave it for 15-20 minutes, and if puppy hasn't eaten, it disappears until the next mealtime.  That teaches pups to eat when food is available.  It also helps you - if your puppy is taught not to be picky, then later, if he really does go "off his feed", you will know that it is time to see the vet.

Ah, I remember a post that Sheba won`t eat chicken drumsticks....without getting them whacked several times...? [;)] [sm=lol.gif]

Give his food when it`s time to, and take it away after..mhm..I´m generous today...10 min. if he hasn`t eaten until then. Just as Glenda said. No discussion.
And I`ve once read in a German forum:
a healthy dog has never starved to death in front of a full bowl [;)]

Ah, but I don't consider that picky....I consider that LAZY!  And Theo likes to be handfed his breakfast, under my desk with the others around is when it tastes best!  But, he isn't turning down the food, he just wants his special "mom" time.  When your inn is busting at the seams with critters they can't always have their special one on one time, so he's just claimed breakfast as his own.  And that's ok with me.  If DH feeds them in the morning, Theo prefers to eat under HIS desk, but from the bowl.  But if no one has time, he'll eat from his bowl in his crate just like the others.

Not a big deal to whack the chicken good for little miss priss...and not a big deal to hand feed Theo.  But, if they don't eat what they are given, they just don't eat.  I have NO problem picking a bowl up and putting it away with food still in it.

Oh boy do we have a problem.  Our dog is about 19 lbs and is a beagle mix.  He's almost a year old.  He has anal sac issues on an ongoing basis, and we have problems getting him to eat the right thing so his poop is firm and helps his glands do what they're supposed to do.  The vet wants him on a "lite" kibble mainly because of the grains involved---for the very same reason. He needs fiber.

Because he tends not to be crazy about kibble, we've mixed in stuff over time...yogurt, a little peanut butter, pumpkin, even a bit of leftover gravy to get him to eat.  We've been feeding him Royal Canin lite, but we've been gradually trying to mix in some Innova to get him on some good food.  His poop is soft, even when we add pumpkin in.

He had a bout of diarrhea earlier and was on antibiotics, and the vet gave us some Science Diet Prescription I/D to help calm his tummy a bit (which he wouldn't eat, of course).  We're at our wit's end because he will only eat meat products or cheese and nothing is helping the soft stools.

I think we've caused this to some degree by adding in stuff to get him to eat, but we also want to make sure that somehow he ingests something to help with his anal sacs.  Right now we've also got him on some omega fatty acid supplements that we put on his food at the vet's suggestion and the next step will either be antihistimines (they think some of his problems are allergy-related because he was chewing on his paws) and/or a hypoallergenic diet.

Any thoughts or suggestions?  We're afraid of the diet because then he will get NO treats, only the "special" kibble (which I think is lamb and potato or duck and potato).

kellyms, If you post this in the nutrition forum [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tt.asp?forumid=36]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tt.asp?forumid=36[/link] I'm sure you will get more answers but as far as the hypoallergenic diet goes you don't have to use the vet's suggested food. A true elimination diet is done with one protein and one carb source, something the dog has never been exposed to before, like rabbit and buckwheat, venison and oatmeal - something like that. You'd be preparing all of the meals and you could get creative and make treats out of only those ingredients as well.

Baring that - Natural Balance Potato and Duck allergy formula line has dry, canned, and treats. A lot of people have very good luck with it.http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas/PandD.html

    Good luck!!
