    Fence Eater

Hi all, just a quick question. How the heck do I stop Simba destroying my fence?

He has chewed a hole right through to my next door neighbours yard dont think they have noticed yet, and this morning i caught him at it again in a different spot my fences are ruined.

I have tried telling him NO! and giving him a toy to play with but he just loves the wood, is there any kind of repellent I can spray on the fence.

If it carries on I am gonna get a bill from all my neighbours for new fences, I have 11 in total at a cost of about £100 each, I t doesnt bear thinking about!!!!! [:(]

    HELP!!!!!!

Perhaps you could erect a small wrought iron fence just inside the other one...
Actually, Simba just sounds like one of those dogs that shouldn't be left outside to get bored.  Chewing is very self-rewarding to dogs, so they seldom stop.  You can try coating the fence with something yucky, like Vicks Vapo Rub upon which you have sprinkled some Alum, but eventually it washes off.
You could install an electric fence, which I don't normally advise (I prefer boundary training, but it takes a lot of time and effort), but if you absolutely need to prevent damage you can't afford to repair, I suppose it's an option.

I thought it might be boredom but he has lots of toys and my daughter is always out with him playing, plus he doesnt go into the yard for long periods he is just attracted to the wood, anything wood, toys, wood chippings, MY FENCE[:@]

The Iron fence sounds like a good idea, electric fence is a definate no no with a 3 year old running round. Thanks 4 the advice Spiritdog.

If you go to a farm store you should be able to find rigid wire panels with four inch squares  you can set these up inside the favored chewing area and they will discourage the chewing.  They call these panels "hog panels" here in the States, I don't know what they are called in the UK, sorry.

Similiarly, you could put up hardware cloth (like poultry wire but stronger and smaller openings) to do the same thing.

Some dogs just hate to be seperated from "the Boss".  Maybe incorporating a short formal training period into his day would reassure him that he definitely has a place in your pack.
