    Sleepy Cockapoo

    hi--

I've had my pup for just three months now and since having her she has been full steam, energetic, crazy acting beastly dog.  But today-- she just wants to sleep-- a lot.  I don't think she's been awake for more than an hour at a time.  And she seems very skiddish and afraid.  Earlier this morning when I was in the front yard putting up a system to keep people from walking across our yard, I had her with me on her leash-- one that retracts when she comes near.  Well it got out of my hands and went clanging and banging on the ground-- she freaked out and ran as fast as she could, making the noise and comotion even worse.  Thats the only time she was "excited" and before and after that all she does is sleep.  She's seen a vet last week for booster shots and a general look-over and she came out with a clean bill of health.  What could be happening to my pup?

Maybe just getting comfy in the living situation and sleeps when there is nothing else to do...?  Maybe someone can help you more, but Ive had Bailey for a month now, shes 4 months old, and she sleeps most of the day now too.  She didnt when she first got here.  But really, theres not much else for her to do all day... and she may have learned it from my moms lazy dog who does nothing but sleep all day.  I bet if you had another puppy around your dog would go crazy with fun!  Not saying you should get one, just saying that maybe shes just got nothing better to do, and sleeping is comfy!  At least shes not getting into trouble![;)]  I am suggesting this b/c you stated that the vet said her health was fine... so Im assuming its not an illness or anything.

I know how nuts cock a poos can be, I had a delightful little lunatic who lived 14 active years, she died of kidney failure a year ago.

She will get over the skittishness from the leash incident, but you my want to consider putting that leash away for a month or so.  Just the sight of it may be frightening for a bit.

As for today's sleepiness, every pup I've ever raised would occasionally have a day where all they did was sleep, and those days always worried me too.  Now that I've seen it happen in a few pups, I think it's growth related.  They play so hard and grow so fast, every once in a while it catches up with them and they just have to knock out for a day or too.  My kids would do the same thing when they were growing, too.

Actually, I would get rid of the retractable leash altogether.  Not only has it scared the crap out of your pup, it's the best tool I know of to teach a dog to pull on lead.  So, if you want a dog that walks politely on her leash, that thing has to go.  What you can use instead is a 30' cotton training lead.  I hope you have this puppy in classes.

i completely agree about the retractable leash.  i think they are one of the worst things ever invented.  that was the first leash i used when i got emma and it was so horrible!!  i took it back to the store and got my money back.  i cant tell you how much i hate those things.  if anything happens you absolutely no control over your dog with one of those.

I wouldn't be too overly concerned with the sleeping.  Most puppies sleep alot.  Usually it's a sign of a growth spurt.  As long as the vet gives you a clean bill of health I wouldn't worry.
