What to do - encountering an off-leash dog

It is also very dangerous if your dog is arguementative.  A rot charged me and the pom one day...I scooped him up and hid him in my coat and ran up and over a hill.  He wanted to argue.

I knew if he went into full arguement mode,  we were both dead meat.  So, if you do get the dog up in time...still get to a safe place.  Jump on a car (trucks are good to look for)  or in someone's yard or something.

When Zeus and I had the 3 dogs on our butt, (he is too big to pick up) there were some houses ahead...I just ran toward those houses with every intention of screaming "let me in!"

I was going to find a  fenced yard, an open door...or something.

But we lost them before it came to that.

I also always call animal control.  I have had enough of the crap.

Problems with picking up your dog:
    (1)  Some dogs will bite their owners out of frustration when picked up like this.  Sort of a "if you can't bite the one you want, bite the one you can".
    (2)  Some seriously aggressive dogs will knock down the owner to get to the dog in his/her arms.  This can put you in the middle of a dog fight.

I know you're talking about off-leash dogs with no owner present, but I've had plenty of problems with off-leash dogs who's owners *are* present, so I thought I'd say something about that.

I used to try to reason with these owners, but usually ended up having to stick out my foot (or worse) to keep their dog away from mine, and with those owners complaining about it - yes, complaining about it! Now, I very *confidently* tell those owners they'd better get their dog on leash since mine's *unfriendly*. I get no more arguments, anymore ... and even find that people are quite friendly about it! Oh no...I have had problems with owners who don't want to leash their dogs. Plenty plenty.

I have also had problems with owners who had their dogs on leash.

I had the pom in the park one day and spotted a dog dragging it's owner around on a flexi leash... way on the other side of the park.  I knew about how much time I had before the dog dragged it's loopy owner right into my dogs space.

This dog was large and in obvious prey mode.  And I knew exactly what I was going to hear from loopy owner "My dog wants to play with yours."

I scooped mine up and put him in the truck when they got too close....and went to a safer area.
