    With regards to "food aggression"

Maybe I am in the minority here but.....

My dog allows me to mess with her while she eats, pretend to eat her food, etc, because I'm top of the "pack"

If the cats sniff or eat her food, she grunts and grumbles and stands next to them, but does nothing.

However, if another dog tries to eat her food, she goes ballistic.

I just see nothing wrong with her protecting her food from other dogs. Its her food, isn't it? She allows me, top in the pack order, to "eat" her food, but if a dog she considers herself equal to or above eats her food, she becomes the epitome of the word B*tch. I know some people would tell me that this is bad behavior...but isn't that how wild dogs/wolves are? Isn't the natural, to protect your own food? I don't know. That's just my opinion. I have no problem with her snapping at another dog that tries to eat her food.....am I wrong?

Tricky situation there.  I am not a fan of food aggression/resource guarding at all.  On the other hand, I have seen Xerxes pushed away from his food bowl by the cat-and I'm not a fan of that either.

If she's guarding her food from another dog, and you have a multiple dog household, I would make sure that you feed them in seperate areas-she will be teaching that other dog to resource guard as well.  This can lead to some very nasty squabbles.

Best bet is not to allow it at all, or feed her in a secure area and allow no other critters near her.[sm=2cents.gif]

I don't currently have any cats, but I did in the past and noticed the same thing.  I find it amusing that a kitty can nonchalantly nose their way in and nibble away.  Maybe dogs just know that they don't eat very much [:)].  I can also handle my dogs or their food when they're eating with no problem.  I cannot trust that I could ever feed them near each other though.  I have it set up so they can't even see or hear the other eating because it could be just the kind of trigger to cause a problem later.

My husky is a resource guarder around other animals (any human, even kids, can take her food/bones from her). I find it *very* annoying but I didn't know better when she was first a pup. The reason it's so hard is all of my friends and family have dogs and when we go on trips with the dogs it's always an issue with food and bones. I have to tell friends/family to pick up their dogs bones when I'm coming over, etc. It really is a hassle and I feel like a bad dog owner because of it. It gets tiring having to watch her every second when we're visiting other people. She's great playing with other dogs, it's just food and bones that set her off.

I just got a new puppy and I feed him in his crate and my husky in her room. I will not allow the husky near the puppy while it's eating, but I have my brother and sisters dogs eat out of his bowl while he's eating. So far the puppy hasn't shown any signs of resource guarding around other dogs so I'm hoping for the best.

So, imo it's just a hassle and better to nip in the bud early before you get a grumpy old grandma dog like mine.

Ginny is my only dog and I have two cats, one mine and one a foster.

I only became aware of this when my parent's dog tried to eat her food when I was visiting at home and she jumped all over her, snapping and barking (no injury done, though - Ginny is a "trash-talker" and "fisticuffer" but never actually hurts another dog)

I don't know....hmm...I figure as long as she isn't aggressive towards ME or the cats, it doesn't bother me too much. If I ever have another dog I will feed them seperately, etc. She isn't posessive over toys or anything, its just food. I guess if she bit dogs who took her toys as well, I would be more worried. She is actually quite generous with her toys/bones.
