House training Issues - my 6 month old puppy doesn't seem to remember to "go" outside so goes on the carpet instead when he comes inside

He has two walks a day, frequent trips outside to the garden, but the second we put him out he goes to say hello to the rabbits in the hutch or whines and barks at the door (perfect at 6,30am, just what the neighbours want). He shows no inclination to want to be out there alone or to go to the toilet, a couple of times we've gone out with him and eventually he'll pee. But then when he's inside he'll show no "tells" and all of a sudden there's a nice big smelly pile on the carpet. He has a set routine and yet we're having these accidents, he just doesn't seem to be able to comprehend the purpose of going outside! We praise him like crazy the couple times he's peed outside, but to no avail HELP!!

Welcome to the forum.

It's important to realize that he has no idea yet why you care where he goes to the bathroom. This has to be taught by you and it doesn't happen in just a few weeks for most puppies. Accompany him every single time you take him outside. Keep him on a leash so he isn't distracted. Walk in a figure 8 pattern. Have some very tasty treats with you. When he potties, treat him. If he doesn't potty , put him in a crate when you go back inside. You are crate training him?

Don't give up. He'll get it. Be consistent with your praise and never scold if he has an accident in the house. Accidents are the owner's fault. You should use an enzymatic cleaner to clean any spots he's used inside. Nature's Miracle is a good one.

We are crate training yes, the tricky part is undoing the bad habits he's picked up in his previous home, it was a free-for-all!

We started a diary for him to mark out when and where he "goes" so we can see a pattern and work out when he's likely to need to go. Am so proud, he did his business outside this morning! Hopefully it will stick, but as you say we've got to stick at it!
