Teaching a Pup not to be so Pushy (Rude)

First alittle history, Abby is a 5 yr old small breed mix - when we had our lab (a 13 yr old) Abby was the alpha, I think it was because the lab just didn't care.  But Abby was top dog.

We now have a 5 month old puppy(large mix breed) Freida, and the puppy is very pushy, blocks Abby every chance she gets, steals things from Abby -toys bones and Abby does nothing about it.  But Abby does stand and look at me - as if to say can you help me.

Freida is pretty good otherwise, not coordinated yet, just found her tail, playful.  I take them for walks together and they are fine.  They never fight or growl at each other.  I am feeling sorry for Abby.

Why doesn't Abby just growl or snap at Freida just once, to put her in her place.

Please don't suggest I get a trainer.  I thought they would settle this by themselves without me saving Abby (which I haven't done yet - but I do tell Freida NO when I see her being pushy or rude.

Freida came from a rescue shelter and probably spent the first 4 months of her life being moved around because they were trying to save her.  She has come along way with us already, has put some weight on and is house broke.

Will she grow out of this rudness and pushiness!  Thank you for your comments.

If it doesn't bother Abby, you shouldn't let it bother you.  Dogs are very good at working out their relationships and sometimes humans make things worse when we try and micro manage things.

If you feel Abby is overwhelmed, at any time, put Freida in a crate or another room and let Abby have a break from the puppy monster.

    Puppy Monster...........I just love this.

Thank you for your suggestion, it sure makes sense now that you mention it.

I agree, let them sort it out between them.  Abby may be playing the big sister, waiting for just the right time to ZAP her one! (I know, I am a big sister!)  Ha ha haaaaa

Dodger was (is) a pushy puppy with Sandy.. Now Sandy is a 14lbs JRT and Dodger is a 50lbs Kelpie.. Sandy let Dodger get away with quite a bit, it's called a puppy pass. Once she had enough, she nailed him good.  The only times I step in is when Dodger doesn't take a hint and keeps pestering.

Let Abby decide when she's had enough and if the puppy doesn't take hint, then step in and remove pup. Put her in a crate with a chewie. It's not punishment per say, just a way of saying "You don't listen, you can't play"
